Jason McCourty News
Free-agent cornerback Jason McCourty announced on Instagram on Friday that he's retiring from football after 13 seasons in the NFL. The former 2009 sixth-round pick out of Rutgers made an impact everywhere he played. McCourty begin his career with the Tennessee Titans and spent eight seasons with them before joining the Cleveland Browns in 2017. He then spent three years with the New England Patriots and played in seven games due to a foot injury with the Miami Dolphins in 2021. McCourty will end his excellent NFL career with 744 tackles (598 solo), 18 tackles for loss, one sack, 18 interceptions (one four a touchdown), 108 passes defensed, nine forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries (two TDs) in 173 regular season games (141 starts).
The Miami Dolphins are not expected to re-sign cornerback Jason McCourty this offseason. McCourty won't survive the new coaching regime in Miami after playing in just seven games in 2021 due to injury in his first season with the Dolphins. The 34-year-old veteran finished last year with 21 tackles (10 solo) and two passes defensed in his seven games. McCourty probably won't have a very robust free-agent market, but he could land a cheap deal for a team in need of defensive back depth this offseason. He hasn't had an interception since 2019 and also doesn't have over 40 combined tackles in a single season since 2018 with the New England Patriots.
The Miami Dolphins signed veteran free-agent cornerback Jason McCourty to an undisclosed one-year deal on Thursday, according to a source. The 12-year veteran will reunite with head coach Brian Flores after the two worked together with the New England Patriots. The 33-year-old McCourty will give Miami a veteran presence in the secondary and is expected to be behind both Xavien Howard and Byron Jones on the cornerback depth chart. McCourty had 115 solo tackles, two interceptions, 19 passes defensed and a forced fumble in the last three seasons with the Patriots. He was drafted in the sixth round in 2009 by the Tennessee Titans and spent eight seasons with them before a one-year stint with the Cleveland Browns.
