Matt Cassel News
The Indianapolis Colts have visited and worked out with free-agent quarterbacks Matt Cassel and Brandon Weeden this week, in addition to Brock Osweiler, according to a source. With Andrew Luck hanging up his cleats last weekend, the Colts want someone other than Phillip Walker backing up Jacoby Brissett in 2019. Cassel, Weeden and Osweiler are low-end backup options, but at least they have some real NFL experience.
Detroit Lions quarterback Matt Cassel has won the preseason battle to be the teams backup quarterback, as Jake Rudock was cut during Saturdays wave of roster cuts. Cassel and Rudock had been competing to back up Matthew Stafford this preseason. Cassel was the front-runner entering camp based off of his experience in the league. Meanwhile, Rudock had the better preseason numbers, but its clear the team values Cassels experience. If anything were to happen to Stafford this season, the offense would take an immense hit with Cassel at the helm. However, if youre in a league that rosters a team quarterback, Cassel can serve a purpose in the event of a Stafford injury.
Detroit Lions quarterback Matt Cassel drew the start for the team's preseason opener, as Matthew Stafford did not dress. Cassel completed 10 of 18 passes for 81 yards. He was also sacked three times. He led the first three drives until the Lions scored a touchdown in the second quarter. Jake Rudock then replaced him for the majority of the game until Cassel was brought back out for the team's last drive when they trailed 16-10. Then with just 25 seconds remaining and Detroit driving down the field, Cassel was sacked and he fumbled. Oakland recovered it, ending Detroit's chances.
