The Seattle Seahawks reportedly visited with unrestricted free-agent running back Rashaad Penny on Wednesday. Seattle is pretty familiar with Penny after taking him with the 27th overall pick in the 2018 draft out of San Diego State. The 28-year-old flashed moments of brilliance in the first five seasons with the Seahawks but just was never able to stay healthy enough to stay on the field for long stretches. Penny averaged 5.7 yards per carry with 1,918 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on 337 carries in Seattle while also catching 27 passes for 222 yards and another score. He had his smallest role yet with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023, carrying the ball 11 times for 33 yards in three regular-season games. A move back to Seattle would have Penny serving as backfield depth behind Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet.
The Las Vegas Raiders have signed interior offensive lineman Cody Whitehair, according to NFL insider Field Yates. The 31-year-old was selected by the Chicago Bears in the 2016 NFL Draft, and he spent his entire eight-year NFL career in the Windy City before becoming a free agent this offseason. He earned a trip to the Pro Bowl in 2018. Whitehair has played in 124 games (118 starts) and has experience at both left guard and center. The Raiders could take a swing on a quarterback in the first round of the upcoming NFL Draft, and building up the offensive line is a key priority, as shown by this signing.
Seattle Seahawks linebacker Uchenna Nwosu (pectoral) suffered a season-ending pectoral injury in October of the 2023 campaign, but he said he expects to be ready for training camp this offseason. The former Los Angeles Chargers second-round pick in 2018 had his best season as a pro in his first year with Seattle (2022), totaling career highs in tackles (66), sacks (9.5), forced fumbles (three), and run stuffs (12.5). The 27-year-old appeared in just six games last year and collected two sacks. Nwosu is projected to be a starter in the first season under new head coach Mike Macdonald, who is known for helping develop defenders.
Florida State edge defender Jared Verse is set to visit the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. The 23-year-old has already met with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and will meet with the Denver Broncos soon. Verse is a projected first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft after posting 89 tackles (45 solo), 29.5 tackles for loss, and 18 sacks over the last two seasons in Tallahassee. Seattle, Tampa Bay, and Denver all have needs at edge rusher, so any of the three franchises could be a good fit. The two-time first-team All-American registered elite speed and explosion grades during his pre-draft athletic testing, so he could be picked as high as Denver's No. 12 selection.
The Athletic's Bruce Feldman believes that Washington offensive tackle Troy Fautanu would be a great fit for the Seattle Seahawks with pick No. 16 overall in the first round of this year's NFL draft. Fautanu can play tackle or guard at the next level, and the Seahawks need help all over their offensive line. The 6-foot-4, 317-pound offensive lineman could also reunite with his former offensive coordinator, Ryan Grubb, who is now in Seattle. Fautanu started 29 games at left tackle and two at guard for the Huskies and won the Pac-12's top lineman award in 2023. "He is a mauler, but he has good flexibility and agility. He's a tough dude, but sometimes gets himself out of position," one coach said.
