Manny Machado News
San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado (elbow) said there is no definitive target date for his return to being 100 percent recovered from offseason elbow surgery. It's been 220 days he last played third base in a game and 187 days since the extensor tendon in his right elbow was fixed. Manager Mike Shildt said the end of April was a "loose" goal, but "there's not really a timetable on it," Machado said. The All-Star third baseman said his shoulder isn't 100 percent, and he entered Sunday's finale against the Giants hitting just .190 with a .673 OPS. The 31-year-old has been told by doctors that he might not feel 100 percent until next year. Fantasy managers shouldn't panic yet, but it's fair to wonder if Machado's slow start this year at the plate is related to his elbow injury.
San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado (elbow) is ahead of schedule but weeks away from returning to the field. Recently, Machado threw from further distances and came out feeling good. At minimum, he is still weeks away from playing the field. In the short term, continue to expect Machado to get at-bats every day as San Diego's primary designated hitter as he continues to recover and rehab his elbow injury. Machado is off to a slow start this season, slashing .184/.295/.395 with two home runs, seven RBI, and several runs scored over 44 plate appearances. Despite the slow start, fantasy managers should continue to roll with Machado in all league formats.
San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado went 1-for-4 with two runs, two walks and a three-run homer in Thursday's victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was the second straight game that the veteran has been the designated hitter with Tyler Wade drawing the start at third base. Machado hit .370 in the Cactus League this spring, but didn't have a homer. Not much for managers to worry as just two games and he's shown why he is one of the best in the business. The 31-year-old's .258 batting average in 2023 was his lowest since hitting .256 in 2019, but he stayed the course in the power department with 30 homers and 91 RBI. Machado is hitting cleanup in a strong Padres lineup this season and should continue to provide plenty of value out of the hot corner for managers in 2024, especially with an ADP of 42.

San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado's fantasy stock is down in 2024, although he still managed to hit 30 home runs and drive in 91 runs in his fifth season with the Friars in 2023. The 31-year-old six-time All-Star's .782 OPS was his lowest mark since 2017, and his .258 batting average (140-for-543) was his lowest since 2019, his first year in San Diego. An elbow injury that plagued Machado for much of the season could be to blame, though. The injury was the reason why he made 33 appearances as the team's designated hitter to close out the season before he underwent surgery to fix a tendon in his elbow following the conclusion of the season. Machado, now 31, probably won't be ready for the start of spring training and could be limited to DH duties again at the opening of the 2024 regular season. There's a little more risk associated with Machado due to his offseason surgery, but he was still able to produce 30 homers for the second straight season and came just shy of his third-straight 100-RBI campaign while being at less than 100% health for a good chunk of the year. And when healthy, there's no reason to believe he won't continue to be an elite defender at third base. RotoBaller currently has Machado ranked as the No. 53 overall player, with ATC projecting him for a rebound in average at .270 while adding 29 home runs and 93 RBI in 2024. Machado is RotoBaller's No. 6 fantasy third baseman heading into draft season.
