Archie Bradley, Greg Holland Closing Candidates In Arizona

The Arizona Diamondbacks are taking their closer decision down to the wire this year, with relief pitchers Archie Bradley and Greg Holland the candidates. Holland's velocity has been down in spring training, but the team thinks he's fine and he'll pick it up in the regular season. Bradley missed an outing with neck stiffness but has regained his curveball that he wasn't able to throw in 2018 due to a fingernail issue. Holland has more experience but is also a much more volatile fantasy option. He had a league-leading 41 saves in 2017 for the Rockies but had a 4.66 ERA and only three saves with two teams last season. Bradley is much more polished at this point as a late-inning reliever, but the D-backs might prefer to use him in high-leverage situations before the ninth frame.

Archie Bradley's Finger Issues Behind Him

Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Archie Bradley said the cracked-fingernail issue that he dealt with last year isn't an issue any longer. "This nail is solid. Im throwing some hammers this year. Im going to have one of the best curveballs in the big leagues this year. Its nasty," Bradley said. It's unclear if the D-Backs plan to use Bradley as their primary closer after the signed Greg Holland, but he remains one of their best high-leverage arms. The uncertainty around how manager Torey Lovullo will deploy Bradley is hurting his fantasy value, and he's only in play late in deep mixed drafts for those speculating on saves.

Archie Bradley Settles With Diamondbacks

Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Archie Bradley avoided salary arbitration on Friday by agreeing to an undisclosed one-year deal. Many pegged Bradley as the favorite for saves in Arizona's bullpen heading into 2018, but that didn't happen and they preferred to use him in a setup role. The hard-throwing righty had a 3.64 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 75 K's in 71 2/3 innings and three saves on the season. Because it's unclear if Bradley or Yoshihisa Hirano will be the primary ninth-inning guy in 2019, Bradley is merely a late-round flier for those speculating on saves.
