Andrew Suárez News
The San Francisco Giants optioned starting pitcher Andrew Suarez to Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday, and they recalled reliever Sam Coonrod from the River Cats in the corresponding move. Suarez was pounded for nine runs - seven earned - and nine hits with three walks over just four innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks in his most recent start. Coonrod had some success at Sacto, and he said it began when he started throwing his two-seamer to set up his slurve as a strikeout pitch. That helped him keep the ball down, vital at elevation in the Pacific Coast League. Coonrod is not someone to add in fantasy leagues, but monitor his progress for the pitching-starved Giants.
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Andrew Suarez will make first start of the season on Monday at home against the Atlanta Braves. Suarez spent the majority of the 2018 season in the Giants rotation, making 29 starts with lackluster results. Hes spent all of this season with Triple-A Sacramento, making six starts and posting a 6.33 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 27 innings. Even while working in a strong pitcher-friendly park in San Francisco, Suarez has not given any reason for optimism. This will push Shaun Andersons second major league start back to Tuesday.
The San Francisco Giants don't plan to give either starting pitcher Andrew Suarez or Dereck Rodriguez a breather down the stretch with both pitchers set to exceed their career highs in innings pitched in a single season. If they made every start, youre looking at 180 innings for these guys, and thats where you would want to get them, manager Bruce Bochy said. Were comfortable not skipping them or having to back off right now. Now, that could change in a month if theyre showing signs that they could use a break, but theres no plan to back off either of them. Pitching coach Curt Young said both pitchers are scheduled for up to 13 starts in the second half, which would mean roughly 78 more innings for each. Both pitchers have been pleasant surprises for the Giants, with Rodriguez sporting a 2.89 ERA and Suarez with a 3.94 ERA. The team's plans could change if either pitcher shows signs of tiring down the stretch, but for now they will both continue to be acceptable streamers in deep mixed and NL-only affairs.
