Brent Honeywell Jr. News
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Brent Honeywell Jr. (elbow) has been shut down from throwing indefinitely after an MRI/CT scan showed an olecranon stress reaction in the bone in the back of his right elbow, according to trainer Nick Paparesta. The 26-year-old was once a top prospect for the Tampa Bay Rays, but injuries have derailed his career. He missed three straight seasons from 2018-20 with elbow injuries and finally made his big-league debut by throwing 4 1/3 innings last year. Honeywell will now go back on the shelf with more elbow issues, and it's uncertain when he might be ready to pitch for the A's. Fantasy managers in dynasty/keeper leagues shouldn't hold out too much hope for him at this point.
The Oakland Athletics acquired right-hander Brent Honeywell Jr. from the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday in exchange for cash considerations. Honeywell was recently one of the top-rated pitching prospects, but multiple elbow injuries have derailed his progression. The 26-year-old was a second-rounder for the Rays in 2014, but since 2017, he has had four elbow surgeries. Honeywell was able to return this year and went 5-4 with a 3.97 ERA, two saves and 67 strikeouts in 31 games for Triple-A Durham, and he made his major league debut with Tampa while giving up four runs in 4 1/3 innings over three games. When healthy, Honeywell has a nice four-pitch mix, and he's held hitters to a .232 average in 110 minor league appearances. It will be interesting to see if Oakland uses Honeywell in a relief role moving forward.
Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Brent Honeywell Jr. was optioned back to Triple-A following Saturday's game, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. He was recalled from Triple-A on Friday, but now will return to the minors without making an appearance as the team intends to activate Michael Wacha off the injured list on Sunday. In three appearances this season, Honeywell has an 8.31 ERA with four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings of work. Managers shouldn't expect much value out of Honeywell this year, but he could be a solid pitcher to roster in 2022.
