Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez said he'd love for second baseman Cesar Hernandez to be his leadoff hitter this season. It would be a curious placement for the 31-year-old switch-hitter, who had a .308 on-base percentage in 637 plate appearances with the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox in 2021. Hernandez has gotten on base at a .345 slip in his nine seasons in the big leagues, but he hasn't run much since 2018 -- just 11 stolen bases in the last three years. He had a career-high 21 long balls and drove in 62 last year, and a move to the top of the order in front of Juan Soto, Josh Bell and Nelson Cruz would certainly be a boost to his modest fantasy appeal.

Chicago White Sox second baseman Cesar Hernandez will become a free agent after the club declined its $6 million dollar option on him. Hernandez hit a career-high 21 homers this past season, but slashed a mediocre .232/.308/.386 in 570 at-bats for both Chicago and Cleveland. This represented a major step back for Hernandez in overall production, as he managed a .753 OPS over his previous five seasons combined. Should Hernandez manage to find a starting role this offseason, he could be a bargain for fantasy managers, especially in categories leagues where he's a sneaky target for runs scored.

Chicago White Sox second baseman Cesar Hernandez isn't in the starting lineup for the first game of the American League Division Series. The White Sox will match up with Houston Astros right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. but will do so with Hernandez on the bench. Hernandez hit .232 with a .309 on-base percentage, three home runs, and a stolen base in 217 regular-season plate appearances for Chicago after being acquired at the trade deadline. It'll be Leury Garcia starting at second instead and batting ninth on Thursday. Garcia doesn't have a hit in seven career plate appearances against McCullers Jr., but he is batting .337 with a .371 on-base percentage in 108 plate appearances since the beginning of September.
