Cesar Hernandez, Roberto Perez Not In Lineup For Second Game

Cleveland Indians second baseman Cesar Hernandez and catcher Roberto Perez are not in the lineup for the second game of a doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox. It's merely a rest day for both in light of the 60-game sprint ahead of both players. Hernandez went 2-for-4 with a run scored in the first game while Perez went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Yu Chang takes over for Hernandez at second and veteran Sandy Leon will be behind the plate for Cleveland.

Cesar Hernandez Expected To Lead Off For Indians

Cleveland Indians second basemen Cesar Hernandez is expected to lead off this season, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. Oscar Mercado was the presumed leadoff hitter, but it sounds like he may end up hitting in the bottom half of the order. The Indians signed Hernndez after the Phillies decided against tendering his contract at the end of the season. The second baseman has spent the majority of his career at the top of the order, and he owns a .275 average and .753 OPS when hitting first. The news certainly boosts Hernandez's fantasy value, as he could now be a major factor in runs scored.

Indians Sign Cesar Hernandez

The Cleveland Indians signed second baseman Cesar Hernandez to a one-year, $6.25 million deal on Monday, according to sources familiar with the agreement. Hernandez will form a middle infield tandem with Francisco Cervelli, unless the Tribe deals the All-Star shortstop this winter. Hernandez, 29, hit .279/.333/.408 with 14 home runs, 77 runs scored, 71 RBI and nine steals in 612 at-bats for the Phillies in 2019. He's been pretty durable in his career and is mostly an on-base guy with limited power and decent speed, although he didn't get on base nearly as much last season and had single-digit steals for the first time since 2014. He's not flash but can be a nice source of steals and runs in deep mixed leagues.
