Dom Nuñez News
Colorado Rockies catcher Dom Nunez went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run and a strikeout in a 7-3 win over the Diamondbacks on Thursday. Nunez took D-Backs starter Merrill Kelly deep for a three-run shot in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the Rockies up 7-0. It was his third home run and third hit of the year. It's still very early but Nunez has outplayed veteran backstop Elias Diaz, up to this point. He's slashing .214/.214/.857 with three home runs and five RBI to Diaz's .143/.250/.143 with zero RBI. Neither player has looked all that great but Nunez has separated himself with the three long balls. They're in an even time split as of now and they're hard to trust for fantasy purposes as they both have a slot of swing and miss in their game.
Colorado Rockies catcher Dom Nunez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 11-6 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Rockies were getting no hit by Trevor Bauer until the seventh inning when they exploded for six runs, which all came via the long ball. Nunez took LHP David Price deep with a towering fly ball over the right field wall for his only hit of the night. Elias Diaz started on Opening Day while Nunez started behind the plate on Friday. Diaz should see the majority of work at catcher this year as he possesses more experience than the 26-year-old Nunez, who has struggled over his limited opportunities at the major league level.
Colorado Rockies catcher prospect Dom Nunez hit a rocket out to right in Friday night action in Scottsdale, and there is no question that he can put a charge into a ball. He showed that during a brief stint in the majors last year when he knocked five extra-base hits in just 39 at-bats. Unfortunately, the power isn't the limiting factor. The contact is. Nunez hit just .179 during his cup of coffee, and he hasn't hit above .244 since Single-A. With Colorado expected to have light-hitting Tony Wolters working as their primary backstop, there's an opening for Nunez to earn some playing time, but he'll have to show that he can regularly make contact to get there.
