Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Joely Rodriguez (shoulder) was activated from the 15-day injured list on Saturday. Rodriguez missed a little over a month of action with left shoulder inflammation. Injuries have kept him out of the year, anyway, however, as he's worked just four innings (five appearances) to the tune of an ugly 18.00 ERA and 3.25 WHIP. Justin Garza, another struggling reliever, was optioned back to Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move.

He gave up three hits and a run in two-thirds of an inning on June 23. Manager Alex Cora said on June 25 that Rodriguez will make at least one more rehab appearance before coming off the injured list. The 31-year-old southpaw reliever landed on the injured list on June 1 with left-shoulder inflammation. He had made just five appearances out of Boston's bullpen before the injury and didn't look good, giving up nine runs (eight earned) on seven hits (two homers) while walking six and fanning five in four innings of work.

If there are no setbacks, the southpaw has a chance to return for the club's series against the Chicago White Sox, which begins on Friday. Rodriguez has been dealing with left shoulder inflammation, which has kept him out of action since May 30. The 31-year-old has only played in five games this season, as he also missed time with an oblique injury to start the campaign. Across four innings, Rodriguez has given up eight earned runs on six walks while striking out five. Right now, the six-year veteran has little value in any format.
