José Leclerc News
The Texas Rangers activated right-hander Jose Leclerc (elbow) from the 60-day injured list on Thursday and optioned left-hander Kolby Allard to Triple-A Round Rock in a corresponding move. The team also activated outfielder Steele Walker from the COVID-19 injured list and optioned him to Round Rock. Leclerc threw just two innings in 2020 because of a shoulder ailment and missed all of last season after having Tommy John surgery in March. In nine rehab innings with Double-A Frisco and Round Rock, he allowed five earned runs while walking five and striking out 11. The 28-year-old had a combined 26 saves for Texas in 2018 and 2019, but with Joe Barlow currently entrenched as the team's closer, Leclerc will likely be in some sort of low-leverage setup role initially.
Texas Rangers relief pitcher Jose Leclerc (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery and will miss the 2021 season, according to Kennedi Landry of MLB.com. Rangers general manager Chris Young made the announcement one week after Leclerc was shelved with soreness and discomfort in his right elbow. This is a big blow to Leclerc, who missed nearly all of the 2020 season with a shoulder injury. Now it's unclear just who will take over as closer for the Rangers, who have several options to choose from. Josh Sborz is a possibility managers might want to keep an eye on, as he boasts a career 28.9 percent strikeout rate in the minors and has had a good spring with 12 strikeouts and a 1.13 ERA in eight innings of work.
Texas Rangers pitcher and potential closer Jose Leclerc (elbow) has been sent for additional tests on his ailing elbow. General manager Chris Young is expecting to be without the high-leverage reliever for an extended period of time. The club is also without Jonathan Hernandez (elbow) for a lengthy time as well as Joely Rodriguez (hamstring) and Brett Martin (back) for shorter stints so the bullpen is suddenly quite thin. The injuries could open up opportunities for saves and holds for a variety of different pitchers including Josh Sborz and non-roster pitcher Matt Bush. Leclerc threw just two innings last season due to a shoulder injury.
