Julio Rodríguez News
Seattle Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez ran into the outfield wall while attempting to make a leaping catch during Monday's game. The 22-year-old said he jammed his arm into his ribs and knocked the wind out of him. Despite that, Rodriguez stayed in the game and told reporters he is fine going forward. Fantasy managers can take a sigh of relief that Rodriguez didn't suffer an injury during this play. He isn't expected to miss any time and should be a top tier fantasy option heading into the 2023 season.
Seattle Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez only had four of his 25 stolen bases in the second half of last season, but part of that was due to health, and part of it was pitchers paying more attention to him on the bases. But Rodriguez could be running even more in 2023. "It's a big part of his game," manager Scott Servais said. The 22-year-old reigning American League Rookie of the Year hit .284/.345/.509 with an .853 OPS, 28 home runs, 75 RBI and 84 runs scored in 560 plate appearances and 132 games in addition to his 25 stolen bases in his rookie season in 2022. He's already one of the most dynamic players in baseball, and more stolen bases would only be the cherry on top. J-Rod is here to stay, folks, and he's ranked at RotoBaller as the No. 5 overall fantasy asset.
Seattle Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez was named the 2022 Jackie Robinson American League Rookie of the Year on Monday. Rodriguez won the award over Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman and Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan. The 21-year-old J-Rod led all rookies in 2022 in home runs (28), wins above replacement (6.0), OPS (.854), wRC+ (146) and total bases (260). He led AL rookies in slugging percentage at .509 and ranked second among all rookies in RBI (75), runs scored (84) and stolen bases (25). Rodriguez finished third in hits with 145. He joined Mike Trout as the only players in AL/NL history with at least 25 homers, 25 steals and an .800 OPS in their rookie season. He's the fifth player in M's history to win the award and the eighth Dominican-born player to claim the honor.

J-Rod walked away with the Rookie of the Year Award easily after posting a sweet .282/.343/.505 slash line while adding 28 homers and 25 steals. Now we have an uber-talented player at the age of 22 with an improving lineup behind him, and he's already shown the ability to dominate Major League pitching. He swings the bat with incredible force (117.2 max exit velocity, 51% hard-hit rate) and limits the strikeout enough (26% K%) to post great numbers all across the board. The one thing to note is that his base stealing slowed down significantly after a hot start to the year in that category. He swiped nine bases in April, and then five more in each of May and June, but then just two per month the rest of the way out. There's some doubt that he'll be a 30-steals guy next year because of that, but there should be little doubt that this is a guy who hit a ton of homers, score a bunch of runs, and steal more than enough bases while maintaining a strong batting average. The risk is always slightly higher with a less proven hitter, but everything in the profile suggests that it is safe to draft Rodriguez in the early first round next year. The sky is the limit with this kid.
