Jose Altuve News
Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve continued his torrid start to the season on Sunday, smacking a pair of homers in an 8-5 win over the Texas Rangers. Altuve went 3-for-5 on the day, adding two runs and two RBI as well as a stolen base. He is now up to a .382 AVG to go with five homers and a stolen base. The 33-year-old isn't showing any signs of aging and should continue to be an excellent five-category contributor as long as he can stay healthy.
Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve went 3-for-4 with a walk during Thursday's blowout loss to the Kansas City Royals. The veteran infielder has been his productive self to start the season, slashing .370/.452/.648 with three home runs through 14 games. Altuve continues to be one of the best fantasy second basemen in the league and should garner plenty of counting stats at the top of the Astros lineup. He remains a must-start option for the rest of 2024 even though Houston has been a surprising disappointment overall.
Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve reached base twice during his team's Grapefruit League contest versus the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday. The veteran, fresh off a five-year contract extension, doubled to lead off the game before coming around to score on a Kyle Tucker single. He would also draw a fourth-inning walk and also struck out before departing the contest. It's been a solid, yet unspectacular spring for Altuve to this point as he's hitting .263 (10-for-38) with one homer, three doubles, and a .754 OPS across 42 trips to the plate with four walks and 10 strikeouts in that time. However, he has also stolen three bases. Altuve continues to rank as one of the best fantasy second basemen after hitting .311 with 17 homers and 14 stolen bases across just 90 games in the 2023 season. He missed significant time to begin the season after suffering a broken thumb in the World Baseball Classic in March.

In 2023, Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve returned in mid-May from a broken arm he suffered after being hit by a pitch in the World Baseball Classic. He slashed .311/.393/.522 with 17 home runs and 14 stolen bases over 90 games. Altuve also tied his career-high with a 10.8% walk rate, boosting his run and stolen base opportunities. However, his numbers under the hood suggest the batting average and slugging percentage are due for a decline in 2024. Altuve struck out 17.3% of the time last season, which is still a solid number but was a career-high. His groundball rate shot up seven percentage points to over 48%, the highest since his abysmal 2020 campaign. Add it all up: his expected batting average (according to Fangraphs) was .248, and his expected slugging was .424, almost 100 points lower. A .348 batting average on balls in play skewed his production, and that number should drop to more around the league average in 2024 (.297), especially as Altuve plays in his age-34 season. As one of the best contact-makers in a strong offense, Altuve can still be counted on for at least 15 home runs, 100 runs, and 15 stolen bases, but just extrapolating his 2023 numbers over a full season will surely let fantasy managers down at his current ADP around pick 34 in NFBC drafts.
