George Springer News
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder George Springer slugged a solo home run as part of his team's 9-6 loss to the Detroit Tigers in Grapefruit League action on Friday. The long ball was the veteran's second of the spring in what has been a prosperous start to Springer's 2024 season. He is hitting .318 (7-for-22) with seven runs, three RBI, a stolen base, six walks, and a big-time 1.100 OPS across 28 trips to the plate to this point in the spring. He has just three strikeouts in the process. The 34-year-old endured a down season at the plate by his standards in 2023, hitting .258 with 21 home runs and 20 stolen bases across 154 appearances. While a quality campaign overall, his 104 wRC+ was the lowest of his 10-year MLB career. He projects for a bounce back overall by ATC but his 22 homers and 14 stolen bags projected aren't much different than his 2023 season, although those figures would still serve fantasy managers well.
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder George Springer came up clutch during Saturday's win over the Philadelphia Phillies. The right-handed slugger went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run during Saturday's 13-5 beatdown of the Phillies. Springer's homer off left-hander Matt Strahm was his first of the spring. The Jays are hopeful for better things from Springer after a fairly average season in 2023. Springer has already been named the leadoff hitter for this team, which should boost in fantasy value.
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder George Springer will remain locked in as the team's leadoff hitter for the 2024 season, manager John Schneider told Keegan Matheson of MLB.com. "For Georgie, it's about getting back to what he's great at," Schneider said. "Pulling the ball more is something he's talking about." These are positive comments and promising updates from the skipper after Springer posted a modest .258/.327/.405 slash line with a career-low 8.8 BB% and 104 wRC+ in 2023. On a positive note, he went yard 21 times, eclipsing the 20-home run mark for the seventh time in the last eight years (with the only exception being the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign in which he launched 14).

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder George Springer enjoyed a fully healthy 2023 season, appearing in all but eight of his team's games. That's the good news. The bad news is he endured, by far, the worst season of his career across the board. He managed a 20/20 campaign but also hit just .258 while seeing his walk rate drop to a career-low 8.8%. His isolated power dipped to a career-worst .147, a cool 67 points below his .214 career mark. Once a Statcast darling, the 34-year-old fell well below the league average in key areas such as hard-hit rate, barrel rate, and average exit velocity, ranking in the 29th percentile in the latter. Prior to last season, Springer played in just 70% of his team's games from 2019-2022, which begs the question: Can he stay healthy and bounce back at the plate at age 34 with another season of wear-and-tear under his belt? RotoBaller has him ranked 131st but his ADP is hovering around 120. It's not a huge difference, but Springer remains a risky bet coming off a career-worst season at the dish.
