Kole Calhoun News
Free-agent outfielder Kole Calhoun has decided to retire from professional baseball. The veteran announced his retirement in a lengthy statement online after a solid 12-year run in the majors. Calhoun began to cement himself in the 2013 season when he hit .282 with eight homers in just 58 games. He went on to become the everyday right fielder for the Angels the following season when he hit .272 with 17 home runs and a .775 OPS across 127 games in the 2013 campaign. He would be an integral part of the Angels' offense for the next five seasons, launching a career-high 33 home runs in the 2019 campaign. All told, the 36-year-old posted a .242 average with 179 long balls and 34 stolen bases across 1,239 appearances in the big leagues.
New York Yankees outfielder Kole Calhoun was released on Saturday. Calhoun opted out of his minor-league contract on June 1 and has officially been released on June 3 as the Yankees chose not to add him to their active roster. The veteran 35-year-old should resurface on a new team in the coming days as you can never have enough outfield depth.
Outfielder Kole Calhoun is exercising a June 1 opt-out clause with the New York Yankees and will become a free agent unless the team adds him to their active MLB roster within 72 hours, according to a source. Calhoun has changed his swing this year and currently has a .963 OPS at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, so he's likely to draw interest from other teams if he becomes a free agent again. It's unlikely the Yankees add the 35-year-old to their major-league roster. In 125 games with the Texas Rangers in 2022, Calhoun hit just .196 with 14 doubles, a triple, 12 home runs, 49 RBI, three stolen bases and 36 runs scored in 424 plate appearances. He's a long shot to return any fantasy value in 2023, let alone get another shot in the big leagues with another club.

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Kole Calhoun epitomized the term "steady Eddie" for the majority of his career in Anaheim, producing solid, consistent results, but never taking his game to the next level. He was the perfect OF5 in a five-outfielder league. That changed in 2019, when Calhoun revamped his swing amidst a slump and wound up exploding for 33 home runs and a .236 ISO that year. He carried that success into 2020, as Calhoun popped 16 bombs with a .300 ISO and .362 wOBA in 228 PA last year. A disciple of the Statcast revolution, Calhoun posted a career-high 11.8% barrel rate and a 17-degree average launch angle in 2020, which were two key components to his success. A .211 BABIP and .264 xBA suggest that Calhoun could improve on his .226 BA from a year ago as well. He was dealing with some tightness and soreness in his right knee at the start of Spring Training, which turned out to be a medial meniscus tear. He underwent surgery in early March to repair his knee and should be out all of April. This has caused his ADP to plummet from 260 pre-injury to just outside the top 300. Given his age and reputation for bland stability Calhoun is often overlooked, but if he can marry his newfound power with a batting average around .250-.260 then he could prove to be a tremendous value. Due to the injury he's going un-drafted in most standard leagues so he's a sneaky stash if you have the spare IL slot.
