Pedro Báez News
The Los Angeles Dodgers signed free-agent relief pitcher Pedro Baez to a minor league deal on Thursday and assigned him to the Arizona Complex League. Baez, 34, was designated for assignment by the Houston Astros at the end of April. Before he was cut, he allowed three earned runs while walking three and striking out two in just 2 1/3 relief innings for Houston. The right-hander began his major league career with the Dodgers, pitching for them from 2014-20. Baez showed a considerable drop in velocity earlier this season, and it's worth noting after he missed most of his first season with the Astros due to a shoulder injury. He'll have to prove he's past his injury in the minors before the Dodgers consider adding him to their bullpen.
The Houston Astros designated relief pitcher Pedro Baez for assignment on Tuesday. Fellow reliever Seth Martinez was called up from Triple-A in a corresponding move. Baez was off to a rough start to the 2022 season, allowing six runs (three earned) over 2.1 innings. Martinez, meanwhile, had been struggling a bit at Triple-A. Over six relief appearances, he had a 5.40 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. We wouldn't expect to see him in many high-leverage situations for the team. The right-hander will merely give the Astros more backend bullpen depth.
Houston Astros relief pitcher Pedro Baez (shoulder) is starting a minor league rehab assignment on Thursday with Single-A Fayetteville. Baez was able to throw live batting practice last week and is progressing from a shoulder injury that has kept him out for all of this year so far. The 33-year-old right-hander spent the first seven seasons of his big league career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, posting a 3.03 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 369 strikeouts, 120 walks and three saves in 356 relief innings. He could become a key setup man in Houston's bullpen in the second half of the season and might also be worth a look in deep saves/holds leagues if he can return to his pre-injury form.
