The New York Mets brought reliever Jeurys Familia back during the offseason and former All-Star has not rewarded his club. After entering the seventh inning with his club down two runs Monday night in Atlanta, Familia loaded the bases before getting pulled. All three runs would score as the Braves blew the game wide open en route to a comfortable victory. Familia's ERA continued to climb, now at 7.81 on the season. While manager Mickey Callaway continues to publicly voice his support for Familia, he doesn't seem to be on his way towards improvement.
The New York Mets placed relief pitcher Jeurys Familia on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday with right shoulder soreness after he blew the save against the Reds on Tuesday night. Familia's MRI exam showed no structural damage and just a bony growth that has bothered him off and on for years. He received a cortisone shot. Lefty Ryan O'Rourke was called up from Triple-A Syracuse. The Mets are optimistic that it's not a long-term concern, but Familia had a 6.28 ERA with 13 walks in 14 1/3 innings over his 14 outings this year. Familia could return from the injured list shortly after he's eligible to return. Edwin Diaz is the unquestioned closer in New York, but Robert Gsellman might be the next man up in the eighth inning now.
New York Mets reliever Jeurys Familia continued his strong start to the season out of the bullpen on Thursday against the Washington Nationals. Familia pitched a scoreless eighth inning, striking out three batters and walking only one. Through four appearances in 2019, Familia has yet to allow a run and has only surrendered one hit and two walks over 3 2/3 innings. He has struck out six. Familia is clearly behind closer Edwin Diaz for save opportunities, but he can be counted on in leagues that include holds.
