Nathan Eovaldi News
Texas Rangers starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi fired seven scoreless innings on four hits and one walk in Wednesday's 4-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays, collecting his first win of the season. Eovaldi produced solid results in Texas' Opening Day walk-off triumph over the Chicago Cubs, and he was even better against the Rays. Until Jacob deGrom (elbow) and Max Scherzer (back) are ready to go in 2024, the Rangers are going to rely on Eovaldi as the ace of their pitching rotation. The 2023 All-Star right-hander will be an elite fantasy option when the defending World Series champions host the Oakland Athletics for the start of a three-game set next Tuesday, as Eovaldi is 2-0 with 17 shutout innings and 23 strikeouts in three appearances against the A's since 2022.
The Texas Rangers announced on Tuesday that right-hander Nathan Eovaldi will start the team's Opening Day game on March 28 at home versus the visiting Chicago Cubs. The injury-prone Eovaldi will kick off the year as the Rangers look to defend their World Series title from last fall. The 34-year-old veteran has made the All-Star team twice in the last three years and went 12-5 with a 3.63 ERA (3.88 FIP) and 1.14 WHIP while walking 47 and striking out 132 hitters in 144 innings over his 25 starts in 2023 during the regular season. During the team's run to the World Series in the playoffs, he went 5-0 with a 2.95 ERA and 41 K's in 36 2/3 frames. Eovaldi can be a solid fantasy asset when healthy, but he's gone over 150 innings just once since the 2016 campaign.
Texas Rangers starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi struck out five batters over three innings of work during his outing against the Milwaukee Brewers last week. He allowed just one run on two hits along the way, showing off impressive control and efficiency. The right-hander remains effective heading into his age-34 season and will look to build on a strong 2023 campaign that saw him post a 3.88 FIP, 51.0 GB%, 8.25 K/9, and 2.94 BB/9. The latest RotoBaller fantasy baseball draft rankings have Eovaldi listed 198th overall and 54th among starters.

Nathan Eovaldi pitched like an ace during the Texas Rangers World Series run, but he's more of an innings eater in the regular season. Eovaldi went 12-5 with a 3.63 ERA and 3.96 xFIP over 144 IP in 2023. His 22.9 K% was especially underwhelming from a fantasy perspective, especially when paired with an 8.1 BB%. That said, the 34-year-old has his uses in fantasy. Eovaldi's arsenal starts with a fastball that averages 2,168 RPM, frequently inducing soft contact. The Rangers played great defense with 33 Outs Above Average as a team last year (third in MLB), so soft contact is usually converted into outs. His heater also gets him ahead in the count with a 56.3 Zone%. Eovaldi's best strikeout pitch is a splitter with a 17.8 SwStr%, 38.7 Zone%, and 41.1% chase rate, so he can put hitters away. Eovaldi rounds out his repertoire with a solid cutter (9.2 SwStr%, 58.5 Zone%) and curve (15.3 SwStr%, 40.5 Zone%, 28.5% chase rate). The package isn't exciting, but in a pitcher's park and backed by one of the league's better teams, it works. Eovaldi's ADP of 202.94 is a great value if you need rotation stability in the latter stages of your draft.
