Gerrit Cole News
New York Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole (elbow) got out to 120 feet on flat ground in his throwing program on Tuesday, which is typically as far out as pitchers will go before getting on the mound as they rehab. With that said, Cole isn't sure when he will advance to throwing off a mound. He will take the day off on Wednesday and go from there as he ramps up his throwing progression. If the 33-year-old reigning American League Cy Young winner feels good later this week, manager Aaron Boone said he could star throwing off a mound next week. Fantasy managers in all formats need to keep Cole stashed in an injured-list spot as he attempts to come back from nerve irritation in his right elbow, but he still has a ways to go.
New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole (elbow) is playing catch again on Wednesday in New York, which is his first time doing so on back-to-back days after increasing his throwing distance to 75 feet on Tuesday. Manager Aaron Boone said there is no set date for Cole to get on a mound, though. The Yankees will continue to take things slowly with the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner, who is building his stamina back up. If all continues to go well in his recovery from discomfort in his right elbow, Cole has a chance to return to New York's rotation when he's first eligible to come off the 60-day injured list in early June. Right-handers Clarke Schmidt and Luis Gil should continue making starts for the Yanks through the month of May at least, but the two hurlers are only low-end fantasy streamers under the appropriate circumstances.
New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole (elbow) didn't throw at all on Monday, according to manager Aaron Boone. The right-hander continues to slowly work his way back up from an elbow injury that has sidelined him since the beginning of the season. It sounds like the plan is to have Cole rest on Monday before throwing again on Tuesday. He's expected to throw up to 75 feet during his Tuesday session. Fantasy managers will continue to need to be patient with Cole. He likely won't be back in the Yankees rotation until the end of May.

While Gerrit Cole may not be the number one starting pitcher in fantasy, he's still very much an SP1. The AL Cy Young Award winner had statistically his best season as a Yankee. In 209.0 IP (33 starts), Cole had a 15-4 W-L record, 2.63 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 222 Ks. You don't have to look deep for some red flags, however. Cole's 3.60 xFIP and 3.63 SIERA suggest he was lucky to post a sub-3.00 ERA. Cole's 27.0% K% was his lowest since 2017 and his 96.7 MPH average fastball velocity was down from the 97.8 MPH he had in 2022. While regression may be on the cards, Cole's fastball velocity was still in the 90th percentile and K% in the 76th percentile. The saying that the best ability is availability can also be applied here as no starting pitcher has been more available than Cole. Since 2017, Cole has totalled 1,279.2 IP and made 206 starts. Both are the most in MLB. He is also one of only two pitchers to have topped 200.0 IP in each of the last two seasons. Cole is the ideal option to draft early and then build your offense knowing you have rostered the most reliable ace in baseball.
