Atlanta Braves reliever Mark Melancon tossed a perfect ninth inning, and picked up two strikeouts, to close out Tuesday's 5-3 win over the New York Mets. The 34-year-old was a trade deadline acquisition from the San Francisco Giants and seemingly has the closer role for the foreseeable future. He has posted elite numbers in the past and is worthy of ownership in most formats considering how many wins the Braves pick up.
The Atlanta Braves acquired relief pitcher Mark Melancon from the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday in exchange for pitchers Tristan Beck and Dan Winkler. The Braves made some much-needed upgrades to their bullpen on Wednesday with Melancon and Shane Greene, who should supplant Luke Jackson as the new ninth-inning man the rest of the way. Melancon has a 3.50 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, one save and 44 K's in 46 1/3 innings this year for San Fran. He figures to only be a setup man in his new home and won't have much fantasy appeal in any league.
San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Mark Melancon recorded his first save of the season Thursday versus the Padres. Melancon allowed one hit and struck out one in his outing. Since closer Hunter Strickland (hand) landed on the disabled list, Melancon, Reyes Moronta and Sam Dyson have all recorded saves. Melancon was signed to a big contract prior to last season and could see some run as the closer, but there is no clear closer for the Giants and manager Bruce Bochy could decide to play the matchups. Melancon is worth a speculative add for owners who are chasing saves and who lost out on Dyson. It's unclear at this point if Bochy will give Dyson another chance in the ninth inning after he allowed two runs and was pulled on Wednesday.
