Jordy Mercer News
Infielder Jordy Mercer has announced that he is retiring from professional baseball. The 35-year-old made the announcement through his personal Twitter account on Tuesday. The Tweet opened up with a heartfelt thank you message to the game of baseball. He Tweeted, "Thank You baseball! Thank you for the opportunity and love you have given me. I hope I loved you back just as much." Mercer spent 10 years in the majors and played the bulk of his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He retires with a career batting average of .256 and 66 career home runs.
Washington Nationals infielder Jordy Mercer got the start at second base against the Red Sox Friday, filling in for youngster Luis Garcia, and he managed a solo home run, his only hit in four at-bats. It's just his second homer in 111 at-bats this season, as he's produced a .686 OPS in limited action as a backup infielder. Mercer is past his days of fantasy relevance, but he still has plenty to offer a big-league team.
Washington Nationals shortstop Jordy Mercer (calf) was placed on the 10-day injured list. The 34-year-old veteran is currently dealing with a left leg strain, and it's even more unfortunate considering he was just activated from the IL over a week ago after spending time on the shelf with a right quad strain. Although Mercer has fantasy upside in the right situation, his inability to remain healthy significantly lowers his ceiling. As a result, he can be safely dropped. Carter Kieboom was recalled from Rochester on Saturday to fill the void caused by Mercer's absence.
