Félix Hernández News
Baltimore Orioles pitcher Felix Hernandez (elbow) reportedly opted out of his minor league deal on Monday, per Joe Trezza of MLB.com. The 34-year-old had hoped to continue his push towards the Hall of Fame with the O's in 2021, but ended up posting a 7.94 ERA this spring and has been dealing with right elbow soreness since the middle of March. King Felix would become a free agent should the reports be confirmed. It would have been a nice story to see Hernandez continue to pitch in the big leagues, and there may still be hope for him in 2021, but he can now be ignored from a fantasy perspective.
Baltimore Orioles right-handed pitcher Felix Hernandez (elbow) is slated to work a side session Wednesday in hopes of avoiding an injured list stint. Hernandez left his most recent Grapefruit League start due to tightness in his elbow, but Baltimore has downplayed the severity of the issue. So far this spring, Hernandez has allowed six runs (five earned) across 5 2/3 frames, striking out five batters in that stretch. If healthy, Hernandez would figure to nab one of the Orioles' five starting gigs as their rotation undergoes an overhaul. Check back for an update on the former Cy Young Award winner's status.
Baltimore Orioles right-handed pitcher Felix Hernandez (elbow) was removed from his Grapefruit League start Tuesday early due to tightness in his pitching elbow. Manager Brandon Hyde described the move as precautionary, not wanting to extend Hernandez during a spring exhibition. Barring injury, Hernandez is expected to fill one of Baltimore's five rotation slots to begin the year. Across three starts this spring, Hernandez has yielded six runs (five earned) in 5 2/3 IP, amassing five strikeouts. After not pitching in the big leagues last year, Hernandez is something of a roll-of-the-dice fantasy cog to begin 2021, having posted a 6.40 ERA in 15 starts with Seattle back in 2019. Any kind of significant elbow issue would signal the death knell of Hernandez's early-season fantasy appeal.
