A.J. Cole News
Toronto Blue Jays reliever A.J. Cole picked up his first save of the season on Wednesday, closing the door on the Braves in the club's 4-1 win. He walked one in the outing while serving up three fly-ball outs to secure his fourth career save. It was just the second appearance of the season for the right-hander after getting called up from the alternate site last week, but he did a fine job with the club in 2020 with a 3.09 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. Cole got the nod in the ninth with Jordan Romano getting the night off after a 29-pitch outing on Tuesday and primary setup man Tyler Chatwood handling the heart of the order in a 2-1 game in the eighth. There's no need to chase Cole on the waiver wire unless another arm were to fall in the Jays depleted bullpen.
In the 11th inning of Tuesday nights game at Marlins Park, the New York Yankees sent out reliever A.J. Cole. Immediately, the decision appeared to backfire as he walked the opening batter en route to loading the bases with nobody out. The 26-year-old was in desperate need of a positive outing after having surrendered at least one run in each of his last three outings and five of his last six. After loading the bases, however, Cole induced a groundout, struck out a batter and escaped the mega-jam with a popup to third base. It was a monumental escape for Cole in a much-needed positive performance. The game remained tied and the Yankees would win in the following inning, resulting in a victory for Cole.
Coming off a heartbreaking, extra-inning loss to the Atlanta Braves, the New York Yankees looked to even things up on Tuesday night but were in trouble when A.J. Cole was summoned. The 26-year-old, who was activated from the DL after Jonathan Loaisiga was demoted on Monday, entered the game in the fifth inning after a six-run lead was sliced in half. Cole entered with the tying run at the plate and just one out, but managed to escape the jam, later tossing another inning en route to his second win with the Yankees. While he currently doesnt have late-game situation opportunities, his superb pitching and 0.61 ERA could catapult him into a more important role in the stacked Yankees bullpen.
