Anthony Rendon News
Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon is hitting leadoff for the Angels on Opening Day on Thursday against the Baltimore Orioles and right-hander Corbin Burnes. Manager Ron Washington experimented with using Rendon in the top spot in the batting order in spring training, and now he'll be there for the first game that counts in 2024. The 33-year-old gets the nod to start for the Halos for lack of better options, really. Rendon doesn't have much speed but does possess good plate discipline with an 11 percent career walk rate, so the Angels will be hoping he can set the table for Mike Trout and company. Rendon could boost his counting stats if he sticks at leadoff all year, but he should really only be concerned about staying healthy, as he has played in a total of 148 games in the last three years.
Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington said that he's experimenting with leadoff hitters, which is why third baseman Anthony Rendon was hitting first in the order in the Cactus League game on Wednesday versus the San Francisco Giants. Washington said that the team doesn't have an ideal leadoff hitter, but Rendon does have a knack for getting on base with a career on-base percentage of .367 and 11 percent walk rate in 11 big-league seasons. The 33-year-old has mostly hit third or fourth in his four years with the Angles, which have been marred by injuries. Rendon hasn't played more than 58 games in any of his four years in Anaheim, which has basically made him avoidable in all mixed fantasy leagues going into 2024.
Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon (groin) says he is feeling better and could take live at-bats on Thursday. He added he will be playing "soon". "It was more just soreness. We were just trying to prevent anything bigger, especially so early in camp," Rendon said. The veteran's tenure with the Angels has been plagued by injuries since he signed a seven-year, $245 million deal with the team prior to the 2020 season. He has played a total of just 200 games across four years (including the shortened 2020 season) with the Angels and has struggled in that time. Most recently, he hit .236 with two home runs and two stolen bases alongside a .679 OPS across 43 games in the 2023 season. His fantasy value is at an all-time low and he should be left alone in all formats.

It's fair to say that Anthony Rendon's time in LA hasn't gone well. In three seasons, Rendon has played just 157 games for the Angels with the 47 he tallied last year being a career-low. And he wasn't particularly effective when healthy, hitting .229/.326/.380 with five homers, 24 RBI, 15 runs and two stolen bases. Over the last three years, Rendon has 20 homers, 89 RBI, 68 runs and two steals with a .252/.359/.420 (157 games) and if he managed that over a full season, Rendon would provide value on his ADP (~246). And it's not like Rendon has always been an oft-injured player as before the 2021 season, he spent a total of 24 days (two separate stints) on the IL across five seasons. But the fact the Angels went out and added Gio Urshela and Brandon Drury to their roster this offseason, both of whom can play third base, suggests they have concerns about Rendon staying healthy. Rendon will turn 33 years old during the 2023 season so still has some years left but is certainly in the Autumn months of his playing career. As a later-round flyer, Rendon makes sense in fantasy, especially with the third base position having less depth than in recent seasons, but just make sure you aren't relying on Rendon as a starter in your lineups.
