Brian Johnson News
Boston Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke said that pitchers Ryan Weber and Brian Johnson are rotation candidates to join Eduardo Rodriguez, Nathan Eovaldi and Martin Perez now that Chris Sale (elbow) needs Tommy John surgery. Johnson, a lefty, has made 25 starts for the BoSox over the last three years, but he posted an ERA just above 6.00 with a weak 6.9 K/9 in 40 1/3 innings, including seven starts, in 2019. Weber has made 11 starts in his five-year career with the Braves, Mariners, Rays and Red Sox, and he had a weak 5.09 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 40 2/3 innings for Boston last year. At best, both of these pitchers will be candidate for depth in AL-only leagues if they're forced into Boston's starting rotation whenever the regular season starts.
Boston Red Sox pitcher Brian Johnson finished just 3 2/3 innings, while allowing three runs on six hits to go with four strikeouts and two walks in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Phillies. The southpaw gave up all three runs in the first inning before settling down. He needed 67 pitches in the short outing, which marked his fourth start in August. Since Chris Sale is shut down for the year, Johnson is expected to soak up a rotation spot. However, his 6.58 ERA and 2.04 WHIP in 26 2/3 innings is putrid. To top it off, his longest outing this year is 5 innings during a start back in June, so he isn't even stream-able in a solid matchup.
Boston Red Sox pitcher Brian Johnson (illness) has been activated from the 10-day injured list on Saturday. Johnson was sidelined roughly a month due to an intestinal illness. He will get the nod versus the New York Yankees in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday. He has a 6.43 ERA this season, but was solid for the Red Sox last season. He's not a reliable streaming option against the strong Yankees offense.
