Zach Davies News
The Kansas City Royals have signed starting pitcher Zach Davies to a minor-league contract on Monday. The former Arizona Diamondback had a 2023 season he would like to forget, pitching to an even 7.00 ERA in only 82 1/3 innings, striking out only 72 batters, and giving up 39 walks. This move by the Royals is clearly a depth move, as the rotation is solid with Cole Ragans, Seth Lugo, Brady Singer, Michael Wacha, and Alec Marsh leading the way. Look for Davies to begin ramping up in the minors and be a potential replacement in the rotation if any of those five guys struggles or gets injured.
The Washington Nationals signed free-agent right-hander Zach Davies to a minor-league deal with an invitation to big-league spring training on Saturday. The 31-year-old veteran has been in the big leagues for nine years and has a career 4.36 ERA. He spent the last two seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, going 4-10 with a 5.19 ERA (4.74 FIP) and 1.43 WHIP with 91 walks and 174 strikeouts in 216 2/3 innings over 45 starts. Davies fell apart last year, posting a bloated 7.00 ERA and 1.66 WHIP with 39 walks and 72 strikeouts in 82 1/3 innings over 18 starts for the Snakes. He'll be attempting to win a roster spot with the Nats in camp this year, but even if he joins the team's starting rotation at some point, Davies should be ignored in mixed fantasy leagues.
The Arizona Diamondbacks designated right-hander Zach Davies for assignment on Wednesday and recalled pitcher Justin Martinez from the minors in a corresponding move. Apparently the D-backs had seen enough with Davies after he allowed four earned runs on eight hits in just three innings in a no-decision against the Chicago White Sox in his start on Tuesday. The 30-year-old just wasn't good at all in Arizona this year, going 2-5 with a 7.00 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 72 strikeouts in 82 1/3 innings in his 18 starts, and Arizona will look to upgrade their starting rotation if they make the postseason. Ryne Nelson is the best bet to take Davies' spot in the rotation if the club secures a wild-card spot.

Everything came together for Chicago Cubs starting pitcherZach Davies in his one year with the Padres, as he posted career-bests in ERA (2.73), WHIP (1.07) and strikeout rate (22.8%). This was, however, one of the least believable breakouts in recent memory, as he benefited hugely from a low BABIP (.249) and high strand rate (78.2%). It is also notable that he achieved these great results without changing anything about himself. His pitch arsenal remained the same and he added no velocity or movement to those pitches. He remained a very fly-ball heavy pitcher (41.3% ground-ball rate) and actually surrendered the highest expected wOBA on contact of his career (.401). A December trade put him in the Chicago Cubs rotation, which is a neutral move, at best, as he goes to a slightly better ballpark for pitchers but has a much worse offense backing him. Do not be fooled by the numbers. Davies will be an average-at-best fantasy pitcher in 2021.
