Blake Snell News
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Blake Snell could be poised to kick-start his 2024 season when he takes the hill in Friday's start versus the division-rival Arizona Diamondbacks. After a long stay in free agency this past offseason, Snell's Giants tenure is off to a rocky start with a 12.86 ERA and 1.85 WHIP while striking out nine hitters and walking four in seven innings (two starts). The 31-year-old reigning National League Cy Young Award winner has plenty of experience dealing with Arizona from his time in the NL West with the San Diego Padres, however, and Snell is 4-1 with a pristine 1.27 ERA and 61:14 K:BB over 42 2/3 frames (seven starts) versus the D-backs dating back to 2021. With the club's current roster batting a career .135 (14-for-104) versus Snell, the hard-throwing left-hander looks like a great fantasy play in both season-long and DFS formats on Friday's full slate.
San Francisco Giants left-hander Blake Snell will throw a simulated game at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday and then make his Giants debut next Monday, April 8, at home against the Washington Nationals, according to manager Bob Melvin. It will be a great matchup for last year's National League Cy Young winner in his first start of 2024. The 31-year-old two-time Cy Young winner signed with the Giants late in spring training, which is why he wasn't ready to be in the team's Opening Day starting rotation. He'll get going next week, though, and should be in starting fantasy lineups in all single-season leagues as a strong No. 2 starter with plenty of strikeout upside. Start him with confidence against the Nats.
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Blake Snell threw four innings against Giants' Double-A players on Friday, striking out 11 batters. The newly acquired lefty threw 74 pitches in the start. The Giants are unsure of Snell's next steps, but there is potential that he could throw the final game of the Giants' upcoming series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday. Giants' manager Bob Melvin has not committed to that, though, and stated he would need to discuss the next steps with the lefty. Snell will be a productive pitcher for many fantasy managers as ATC is projecting him for 206 K and 11 wins in 162 innings in 2024. Fantasy managers might have to wait another week before Snell is available for them to start in their lineups.

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Blake Snell appeared to be showing early in 2023 that his 2018 Cy Young Award-winning season was an aberration, submitting a 5.40 ERA through his first nine starts of the year. Snell flipped that script in a hurry, however, embarking on the warpath to his second career Cy Young trophy with a brilliant final 23 appearances. Over this period, the former Tampa Bay Ray notched a 1.20 ERA (2.74 FIP) and 186:72 K:BB in 135 innings. Although he stumbled a bit in August, Snell tossed at least five frames in each of these showings, surrendering one run or less in 17 of them. Snell's Achilles heel was an obvious one; his league-worst 99 walks prevented him from delivering more length for the injury-plagued San Diego Padres rotation. While Snell's 31.4% strikeout rate sat in the top six percent of baseball, and he ranked first in MLB with 5.8 hits per nine innings, his lack of control lent itself to one of Statcast's highest contrasts in actual (2.25) and expected ERAs (3.79). All told, risk tolerance is the name of the game when it comes to drafting Snell in 2024. The two-time ERA title holder has three campaigns with an ERA of 4.04 or worse in his career. Due to this inconsistency, Snell faced a hesitant market in free agency this offseason based on his desired contract but was finally able to net a two-year, $62 million deal on March 18 to land with a division rival at another pitcher-friendly ballpark in the Bay Area. That leaves the 31-year-old strikeout machine as a high-risk, high-reward investment in fantasy drafts for his bat-missing upside, but daily implosion downside.
