Albert Abreu News
Free agent outfielder Franchy Cordero and free agent reliever Albert Abreu have both signed in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball league with the Seibu Lions. Cordero slugged eight home runs in just 24 games for the Yankees in the 2023 season but also hit just .188 with a 35.2% K% across 71 trips to the plate in the majors a season ago. He is the owner of a career .217 average with 27 HR and 13 stolen bases across 797 trips to the plate in parts of seven seasons between the Padres, Royals, Red Sox, and Yankees. Abreu, 28, also spent the 2023 season with the Yankees, working to a 4.73 ERA across 45 relief outings. The right-hander owns a 4.58 ERA across 108 MLB appearances between the Yankees, Rangers, and Royals.
The New York Yankees claimed right-hander Albert Abreu off waivers from the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday, according to sources. Abreu recently had been designated for assignment by the Royals after he allowed two earned runs on six hits while walking four and striking out three in 4 1/3 relief innings for KC. The 26-year-old also allowed three earned runs while walking 12 and striking out nine in 8 2/3 relief innings for the Texas Rangers earlier this season. Abreu will be joining the Yankees for the second time in his career after spending the previous two seasons in the Bronx. In those two seasons, Abreu had a 5.68 ERA and 1.37 WHIP with 37 K's and 21 walks in 38 relief innings.
The Kansas City Royals acquired right-hander Albert Abreu from the Texas Rangers on Thursday in exchange for right-hander Yohanse Morel. Abreu will be added to the Royals 40-man roster in a corresponding move announced at a later date. The Rangers designated Abreu for assignment earlier in the week after he allowed three earned runs on four hits while striking out nine and walking 12 in just 8 2/3 relief appearances at the major league level this year. The 26-year-old has walked 15.8% of the hitters he's faced in 46 2/3 relief innings in the majors over the last three seasons, so he might not last with the Royals for long if that continues.
