Brian Anderson News
The Seattle Mariners released third baseman Brian Anderson on Tuesday. The 30-year-old signed a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training this off-season in hopes that he could win a platoon/backup role. While he did slash .250/.344/.536 in 28 Cactus League at-bats, it wasn't enough to earn a spot. Injuries have hindered Anderson's career, and he hasn't hit above .250 since 2020. At this point, he may try to find another team to join where he could have a clearer path to a role.
The Seattle Mariners signed free-agent infielder Brian Anderson and right-hander Trevor Kelley to minor-league deals on Friday, according to sources. Both players will receive invites to major-league spring training. The 30-year-old Anderson really struggled in 96 games for the Milwaukee Brewers last year, slashing .226/.310/.368 with nine home runs, 40 RBI and 38 runs scored in 361 trips to the plate before being released after the season. If he makes Seattle's roster, he'll probably serve in a backup or platoon role at third base, at best, with Luis Urias. Kelley, 31, will be looking to serve as relief depth for the Mariners, but he's unlikely to make the big-league roster out of camp. Kelley has a career 6.75 ERA and 1.56 WHIP with 45 strikeouts in 50 2/3 innings in four major-league seasons.
The Milwaukee Brewers reinstated outfielder Garrett Mitchell (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list on Thursday and designated infielder/outfielder Brian Anderson for assignment in a corresponding move. Mitchell is starting in center field and batting ninth on Thursday against St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Dakota Hudson. Mitchell has been out since April 18 due to a shoulder injury that he had surgery on, so fantasy managers can't really expect much through the end of the regular season on Sunday. But the 25-year-old gives Milwaukee another outfield option as they get ready for the playoffs. Anderson had seen his playing time dip dramatically recently and was hitting only .226/.310/.368 on the season with nine home runs and 40 RBI in 318 at-bats.

Brian Anderson has been consistently getting better at the plate since his debut season of 2017. After posting isolated power marks just slightly over .100 in 2017 and 2018, 2020 marks the second season in a row where he's had one over .200. Over the past two seasons, Anderson's power rise has been due to increases in his Statcast metrics, most notably his barrel rate, which in 2020 was a career-best 9.6%. Further adding to the power development, Anderson saw a great increase in pull rate, climbing over 11% to 43% last season. Pulling the ball more usually leads to more power, and his spray chart from last season shows that, with the majority of his home runs going to the pull side. One concerning area from Anderson's 2020 season was that his strikeout rate spiked to 28.8%, by far the worst of his career. It appears that selling out for more power caused him to whiff more, with a whiff rate that was ten percentage points worse than league-average. The power increases are nice and make him a more intriguing fantasy option, but he'll need to manage the strikeout rate for him to become a more complete hitter. Overall, Anderson is a good late-round option at third base, as he should accumulate a good amount of counting stats while hitting the in the middle of the Miami order.
