Miguel Andujar News
Oakland Athletics outfielder Miguel Andujar (knee) will be forced to open the season on the 15-day injured list. Andujar felt discomfort in his right leg while playing left field in a Cactus League game last week, and MRI results on Friday showed a torn meniscus in his right knee. He'll have surgery on March 27, and manager Mark Kotsay said that Andujar is looking at a recovery timeline of at least four to six weeks. It's a bummer for the A's and the 29-year-old, as he hit .357 with a 1.110 OPS and a team-high five home runs in 14 spring games. His absence to open the year now opens the door for No. 5 prospect Darell Hernaiz or non-roster spring standout Hoy Park to make the Opening Day roster. If everything goes well with Andujar's recovery, he could make his 2024 debut at some point in May.
The Pittsburgh Pirates selected the contract of outfielder Miguel Andujar from Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday and optioned infielder Drew Maggi to Double-A Altoona in a corresponding move. To make room on the 40-man roster, right-hander Wil Crowe (shoulder) was moved to the 60-day injured list. Maggi was also named the 27th man for Saturday's doubleheader against the Washington Nationals. Andujar is in right field and batting sixth in Game 1 of the twin bill against Nationals left-hander Patrick Corbin. The 28-year-old was hitting well in the minors, but the former Yankee is unlikely to see much playing time in Pittsburgh for however long he's up. In 36 games with the Yanks and Bucs in 2022, he hit .235 with a homer, 17 RBI and four stolen bases.
The Pittsburgh Pirates designated infielder Miguel Andujar for assignment on Friday to make room on the 40-man roster for the recently signed Andrew McCutchen. The former New York Yankee, Andujar appeared in only 36 games in 2022 (27 with the Yankees) and slashed .235/.257/.311 with a .568 OPS, one home runs, 17 RBI, 13 runs scored and four stolen bases in 140 plate appearances. The 27-year-old hit .297 with an .855 OPS, 27 home runs and 92 RBI in his first full big-league season in 2018 with the Yankees, but he's struggled to come anywhere near that mark since. If Andujar goes unclaimed on waivers, there's a good chance he could return to Pittsburgh's organization and serve as infield depth in 2023.
