Franklin Barreto News
The Washington Nationals signed infielder Franklin Barreto to a minor-league deal on Thursday. Barreto last played in the big leagues in the shortened 2020 season with the Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angels, but he'll have a decent shot to make it back in 2023 with the rebuilding Nationals. He signed a minor-league deal with the Houston Astros in 2022 and played in 73 games for Triple-A Sugar Land, hitting just .162/.259/.274 with six home runs, 21 RBI, 27 runs scored and 11 stolen bases in 274 plate appearances on the farm. The 26-year-old will be competing for an MLB roster spot in spring training next year in D.C.
Los Angeles Angels infielder Franklin Barreto (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery and is expected to be out 10 to 12 months, according to Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com. Barreto was acquired in a mid-season trade with Oakland in 2020, with the Angels sending infielder Tommy La Stella to the Athletics. At one time one of the top prospects in Oakland's system, Barreto has yet to see that potential translate at the major league level, as he has slashed .175/.207/.342 in 101 games over four seasons. After his 2020 campaign was cut short due to shoulder surgery, it's yet another setback for Barreto, and his future with the Angels is likely in doubt at this point.
Los Angeles Angels infielder Franklin Barreto (elbow) will be sidelined for at least the next month due to inflammation in his throwing elbow. Barreto was expected to serve as the Halos' primary reserve infielder, with his absence likely paving the way for Luis Rengifo to snag an Opening Day roster spot. Barreto was impressing offensively during Cactus League play, slashing .350/.409/.650 across 14 contests. Acquired last season in a deal with Oakland, Barreto has yet to find his footing at the big league level. With David Fletcher and Jose Iglesias set to serve as LA's up-the-middle infield combo, Barreto faces another difficult path to earning playing time in 2021, even when healthy, which significantly zaps him of fantasy intrigue.
