Dylan Cease News
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Dylan Cease blanked a red-hot Chicago Cubs offense in Wednesday's 10-2 victory, firing six strong innings on two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts for a win. The Cubs entered the day second in baseball with 71 runs scored, but Cease was up for the challenge on Wednesday. Since Christopher Morel reached on Ha-Seong Kim's fielding error in the fourth inning, Michael Busch's two-run home run represented two unearned runs on Cease's ledger. The 28-year-old right-hander looks to be getting more comfortable after landing in San Diego in March, registering a 2.16 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, and 20:6 K:BB over his first 16 2/3 innings (three starts) of the campaign. His next start is lined up for a potential pitching duel with right-hander Freddy Peralta next Tuesday against the hot-hitting Milwaukee Brewers. Cease threw seven two-run innings in his lone start against Milwaukee in 2023.
San Diego Padres right-hander Dylan Cease is in search of his first win as a member of the club when he takes on the rival Giants on the road. The former White Sox ace surrendered three runs (two earned) on two hits and two walks against six strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings in his Padres debut against the very same Giants on March 30, taking the loss in the process. The 28-year-old endured a down 2023 season after finishing second in AL Cy Young voting in 2022, tossing a 4.58 ERA across a career-high 33 starts. He should be able to bounce back if his 3.87 ERA ATC projection holds but he also has a history of control issues as evidenced by his 10.4% career BB%, putting a cap on his fantasy value.
San Diego Padres right-hander Dylan Cease will make his debut with the team as the starter in the second exhibition game on Monday against the LG Twins after Jhony Brito starts the first game on Sunday. Manager Mike Shildt said Cease will probably aim for two to three innings in that start. The Padres made an unexpected spring splash when they acquired Cease from the Chicago White Sox this week to give them a starting rotation boost for 2024 alongside Joe Musgrave, Yu Darvish and Michael King. The 28-year-old former sixth-round pick in 2014 by the Cubs disappointed with a 4.58 ERA and 79 walks in 177 innings in 2023, but he's struck out 200-plus hitters in each of the last three seasons and was the runner-up for the American League Cy Young in 2022. The move to SD makes Cease an even more attractive No. 3 fantasy starter because of his swing-and-miss stuff.

Expectations were sky-high for Cease entering the 2023 season. The right-hander was coming off a dominant 2022 where he posted a 2.20 ERA and 30.4% strikeout rate in 184 innings and finished second in Cy Young voting. 2023 didn't quite go as planned, with Cease struggling to the tune of a 4.58 ERA, 4.02 BB/9, and zero Cy Young votes. Cease relied more heavily on his fastball in 2023 compared to his standout 2022, a problem considering that Cease lost 1.2 MPH of heat on his four-seamer and had a .336 xwOBA with the pitch. He used his dominant slider less often, instead mixing in a so-so curve that got tagged for a .298 AVG and .538 SLG against. While the cause of this velocity decline is uncertain, one potential cause could be mechanical issues. Cease gained about 0.3 inches on his extension in 2023 compared to past seasons. He will be 28 on Opening Day, so there's no reason to think physical decline is at play. If Cease can regain his velocity he could be a mid-three ERA pitcher with high strikeout rate. He has a 3.40 FIP and 11.4 K/9 over the last three seasons combined, and his slider still performed well with a .216 AVG against and a 20.9% swinging strike rate. Cease may've busted in 2023, but he is a great bounce back candidate heading into 2024.
