St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Jack Flaherty was able to pitch with a 10-plus run lead for the entire game, so there wasnt much to stress about in Game 5 of the National League Division Series against the Braves. Still, he went six innings, struck out eight and allowed just one run on a solo shot to Josh Donaldson. The Cardinals got put to a fierce 10-0 first-inning lead and Flaherty didnt let the Braves flirt with a comeback. He did get stretched to 104 pitches, so expect him to need a full five days of rest. The Cardinals move on to face either the Nationals or Dodgers in the NLCS.
Flaherty was strong, but the Cardinals were never able to get anything going on offense. Flaherty finished the night with three earned runs through six innings while striking out eight. You cant ask for much more on the road out of a young arm that doesnt have playoff experience. Flaherty continues to show his maturity beyond his age and looks to be a good long-term replacement for Wainwright. The Braves evened up the series 1-1 on the back of Adam Duvall and the Cardinals will now bring the series back to home to Busch Stadium.
