Nick Pivetta News
Boston Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta (elbow) is throwing at 120 feet on Thursday and Friday and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Saturday. Pivetta is on the 15-day injured list due to a right-elbow sprain, and while he's making progress in his throwing program, he still has a ways to go and will eventually need to go on a minor-league rehab assignment before returning to Boston's starting rotation. Fantasy managers definitely shouldn't expect the 31-year-old to make it back before the calendar flips to May, but Pivetta should be stashed after looking excellent in his first two starts of 2024. He allowed just one earned run on eight hits (one home run) while walking one and striking out 13 in 11 innings pitched for a 0.82 ERA.
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nick Pivetta (elbow) is going to test his arm and play catch on Saturday. After Pivetta was diagnosed with a flexor strain in his right elbow on Tuesday, it's encouraging to hear he's ready to resume throwing. The 31-year-old right-hander was off to a spectacular start before the Red Sox shut him down, striking out 13 over 11 innings while surrendering only one run and one walk in two starts. Pivetta has a chance to return before April ends, but it remains to be seen if he'll require a rehab assignment before doing so. It's unclear who will join the club's rotation in the interim, as Boston still hasn't formally listed a probable pitcher for Saturday's matchup versus the visiting Los Angeles Angels, so there isn't a clear fantasy beneficiary of Pivetta's absence.
Boston Red Sox general manager Craig Breslow said that right-hander Nick Pivetta (elbow) has a "mild strain" of the flexor tendon in his right arm and could return from the 15-day injured list when he's eligible. The Red Sox wanted to take advantage of the early season schedule to give Pivetta some time off. The 31-year-old is going to miss the next two weeks, but fantasy managers that have him rostered need to keep him in an IL spot until he returns. Pivetta has been excellent in the early going, allowing only an earned run on a solo home run while walking one and fanning 13 in 11 innings over his first two starts in 2024. It's unknown who will take his rotation spot in the short term, with Cooper Criswell, Chase Anderson and Josh Winckowski all being candidates for a few spots starts.

After being removed from the rotation in May last season, Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Nick Pivetta was relegated to the bullpen. With a change in approach, however, his results improved. Once back into the rotation full-time in September, the righty posted a 2.37 ERA, 2.73 FIP, 0.82 WHIP, .187 OBA, and a 38:5 K:BB across five starts (30 1/3 IP). The former fourth-round pick has always had a strong strikeout profile but has struggled with command (career 25.5% K%, 9.0% BB%). Managers shouldn't expect his 4.3% BB% over his final five starts to stick, but it's possible he will not regress to his career 9.0% BB%. His strong SwStr% of 13.1% in 2023 put him right behind the likes of Zack Wheeler and Max Scherzer, while his Contact% of 73.3% was better than both. ATC projections for 2024 don't foresee him maintaining his end-of-season success, with the 31-year-old going 10-9 with a 4.22 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 18.6% K-BB%, with 175 K in 154 IP. RotoBaller ranks him at 193 overall, just behind his NFBC ADP of 189. Nevertheless, if he does find a way to ride his 2023 momentum into 2024, then he could be a value at the end of drafts.
