Anthony Santander News
Baltimore Orioles outfielder Anthony Santander is not in the starting lineup on Monday against the visiting Minnesota Twins. It allows the Orioles to keep Colton Cowser in the starting lineup in right field while he hits fifth against Twins right-hander Louie Varland. Cowser is swinging one of the hottest bats in baseball right now and has started the year going 15-for-34 (.441) with four home runs, 13 RBI, two stolen bases and seven runs scored. The 24-year-old's hot start has made Austin Hays the odd man out in Baltimore's outfield situation on most days. Santander has three home runs on the year in 61 at-bats, but he's also hitting just .180 (11-for-61) in the early going. Cowser has never faced Varland in his career.
Baltimore Orioles first baseman/outfielder Anthony Santander couldn't end his spring struggles in Wednesday's 7-5 Grapefruit League loss to the Atlanta Braves, going hitless in two at-bats with one walk and a run scored. Santander may have cranked two home runs against the division-rival Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday, but in 32 ABs overall during spring training, he's hitting only .156 (5-for-32) with three homers and six RBI. The 29-year-old switch-hitting slugger is going to play a big role as Baltimore's likely everyday cleanup man, and he should drive in plenty of runs in 2024 after slashing .257/.325/.472 with 28 four-baggers, 41 doubles, and 95 RBI in 591 ABs last season. While Santander should be a great source of slugging numbers in fantasy leagues at his 132.4 Yahoo ADP, his lack of speed and batting average will hurt his value a bit.
Outfielder Anthony Santander and the Baltimore Orioles settled at $11.7 million for the 2024 season on Thursday to avoid salary arbitration, according to a source. It's a big raise for Santander, who made $4.3 million last season on his way to slashing .257/.325/.472 with 28 home runs and 95 RBI in 656 plate appearances over 153 games in his seventh year in Baltimore. The switch-hitting 29-year-old Venezuelan did also have a career-high strikeout rate, but it wasn't anything to be overly concerned about moving forward. Santander should remain a reliable contributor across the board for fantasy managers in 2024 in a potent Orioles lineup and he should continue to play nearly everyday because of his above-average glove in the outfield.

Anthony Santander was one of many great stories on the 2023 Baltimore Orioles, slashing .257/.325/.472 with 28 HR and five steals across 656 PAs. Unfortunately, fantasy managers shouldn't bet on a repeat at his current ADP of 144.08. Santander doesn't have tremendous raw power as evidenced by his 94.5 mph average airborne exit velocity and 10.2% rate of Brls/BBE, instead producing power numbers through his 49.7 FB% and tons of PAs. Camden Yards is now a pitcher's park, punishing guys with middling raw pop like Santander. Santander's approach also presents batting average risk. His .299 BABIP in 2023 was fairly high considering his 18.2 IFFB% and 15.3 LD%, with his .235 xBA likely representing a better average projection for 2024. Similarly, Santander's 8.4 BB% and 23.2 K% mask a 37.7% chase rate that pitchers will certainly try to exploit in 2024. The 29-year-old will probably approach 25 HR again, but that alone isn't worth the price. You're better off getting one-dimensional power from a catcher such as Cal Raleigh (138.39 ADP), Salvador Perez (141.60), Sean Murphy (144.98), or Francisco Alvarez (150.09) or investing in a pitcher such as Gavin Williams (148.56) or Jordan Montgomery (146.23).
