Freddy Peralta News
Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Freddy Peralta is settling in nicely to his new role as the team's ace ahead of Thursday's road start against the division-rival Cincinnati Reds. After allowing 12 runs in 15 innings of spring training, Peralta has totaled a 3.09 ERA (2.80 FIP), 0.60 WHIP, and 15:2 K:BB over his first 11 2/3 innings of the regular season. In five appearances (24 2/3 IP) against the Reds since 2022, the 27-year-old All-Star right-hander is 3-0 with a sublime 1.46 ERA and 37:6 K:BB. Peralta has thrown 14 consecutive scoreless innings against Cincy during this stretch, and the current Reds roster is a collective 6-for-40 with just two extra-base hits against Peralta. He should be treated as one of the premier fantasy plays across all formats on Thursday's seven-game slate.
Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Freddy Peralta dominated the New York Mets in Friday's 3-1 Opening Day victory, collecting the win and tossing six innings of one-hit ball with one walk and eight strikeouts. Other than serving up a Starling Marte home run that barely left the ballpark during the second frame, Peralta put on a nearly perfect showing in Milwaukee's regular-season opener. With Corbin Burnes in Baltimore and Brandon Woodruff (shoulder) out of action for 2024, Peralta will be relied on as the new Brewers ace this season. The 28-year-old Dominican right-hander struggled during the first half of 2023, but he amassed a strong 2.81 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, and 103:16 K:BB over his final 13 starts (73.2 IP) of his last campaign and hopes that momentum carries into this year. Peralta is next scheduled to get the ball against the visiting Seattle Mariners during a three-game weekend set starting next Friday.
With Brandon Woodruff (shoulder) recovering from shoulder surgery and Corbin Burnes recently being traded to the Baltimore Orioles, right-hander Freddy Peralta was the logical choice to be the team's Opening Day starter in 2024 on the road against the New York Mets on March 28. General manager Matt Arnold confirmed this. "We are counting on him this year, and he is going to be our Opening Day starter," Arnold said. Peralta has a 3.83 ERA over 580 innings pitched in his six-year career with the Brewers. After an injury-plagued 2022, the 27-year-old stayed healthy last year and set career-highs in starts (30) and innings (165 2/3) while boasting an excellent 30.9% strikeout rate, which ranked fourth in the league. He was undone by the long ball, so if Peralta can keep the ball in the yard more in 2024, he could be even better this year as a high-end No. 2 fantasy starter.

Freddy Peralta had a career-high 165.2 IP (30 starts) in 2023, which bodes well moving forward. The results were impressive with a 12-10 W-L record, 3.86 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 210 Ks. With a bit more luck, it could've been even better for Peralta. His 3.42 xFIP and 3.45 SIERA suggest there's room for Peralta to have a sub-3.50 ERA, especially if the home runs subside. His 16.0% HR/FB was fourth highest among qualified pitchers. The Brewers American Family Field is one of the more home run friendly ballparks so the homers might not subside too much, but there's certainly room for Peralta to lower his ERA. Peralta's biggest fantasy asset is the strikeouts. His 30.9% K% was in the 92nd percentile and of the 17 pitchers to reach 200 Ks last year, Peralta had the fewest total innings. It was likely no coincidence that Peralta had a career-high 94.4 MPH average fastball velocity in the same year he avoided the IL. All four pitches in his arsenal had a sub-.300 wOBA in 2023 as Peralta gave us a glimpse of what he can do over a full season when healthy. He has top-5 starting pitcher potential in 2024.
