Pete Alonso News
New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso blasted his second home run of the spring on Friday in a 3-1 Grapefruit League victory over the Miami Marlins. It was the only hit of the day for the 3x All-Star, going 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. The two-time HR Derby champ is now 6-for-19 (.316) in Grapefruit League action with all six of his hits going for extra bases. Alonso has two home runs and four doubles to go along with three walks (.409 OBP), two RBI, and three runs scored. Looks like the former second-round draft pick will have another productive season at the plate and will justify his ADP of 27 overall.
New York Mets All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2024 season and there has been no sign that a contract extension will be agreed upon before then. The Mets say they are "invested" in keeping Alonso around, but it's looking unlikely that a deal will be reached before he tests the free-agent market. "The best thing for us is for Pete to have a great year and the best thing for Pete is to have a great year, and we'll go forward from there. We're certainly invested in keeping Pete a Met and I'm hopeful, over time, we'll be able to work that out," president of baseball operations David Stearns said. The 29-year-old Alonso hired agent Scott Boras this offseason, essentially assuring he'll play out the 2024 season and reach the open market next winter. Contract issues aside, Alonso is an elite power hitter for fantasy managers after slugging 46 homers and driving in 118 in 2023.
First baseman Pete Alonso and the New York Mets avoided salary arbitration on Thursday by agreeing to a one-year, $20.5 million deal for the 2024 season, according to a source familiar with the deal. Alonso is fully expected to hit free agency following the conclusion of the 2024 campaign, especially after he hired agent Scott Boras this offseason. The 29-year-old right-handed slugger is an elite power target for fantasy managers, having reached the 40-homer mark in the last two seasons. He's also been pretty durable and should rebound in the batting-average department this year after hitting a career-low .217 this past season. In addition to his 46 home runs in 2023, Alonso delivered great counting stats for his fantasy managers with 118 RBI and 92 runs scored.

Only two players hit more homers than Pete Alonso in 2023, despite him seemingly having a down year. In 154 games, Alonso had 46 homers, 118 RBI, 92 runs and four stolen bases while hitting .217/.318/.504. That was the second-most homers Alonso has hit in a season but also his lowest batting average. There's no questioning his power as since debuting in 2019, Alonso's 192 homers are more than anyone else. And the batting average isn't something you should be concerned about repeating. Alonso had a .205 BABIP, a career-low. His .246 xBA might only be in the 35th percentile but if Alonso hit .240, there'd be no concerns about his batting average. Even if Alonso only hits .230, the counting stats will more than offset any batting average drag. The Mets offense looks like it should be better than last year, when they ranked 20th in runs scored (717), so Alonso should have no problem reaching 100 RBI again. He should also be near triple-digits in runs scored. Entering the final year of his contract, Alonso has been durable, missing just 24 games in his five-year MLB career. Providing you can offset the lack of steals with your other picks, Alonso is an ideal early target.
