Dan Altavilla News
San Diego Padres reliever Dan Altavilla (elbow) posted on social media that he underwent successful Tommy John surgery. The 28-year-old had been limited to just two appearances this year and hadn't pitched since April 16. Over five big league seasons, Altavilla has registered a 4.03 ERA in 119 appearances. The right-hander will begin his road to recovery and will likely target a return to the mound by late summer of 2022.
San Diego Padres relief pitcher Dan Altavilla is the likeliest candidate to win the final spot in the bullpen over Tim Hill, Taylor Williams and Michael Baez. Altavilla pitched meaningful innings down the stretch last year and is out of minor-league options. Hill, a left-hander, still has options. He'll almost certainly join the team if there is an injury in the bullpen, especially since the Padres could use another lefty to join Drew Pomeranz after injuries to Jose Castillo (elbow) and Matt Strahm (knee). Austin Adams and Craig Stammen are pretty much locks for the bullpen. There should be plenty of relief innings to go around with the Padres likely to be cautious with their starters early on, so Altavilla could see some high-leverage innings.
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Dan Altavilla gave up one hit, struck out one batter and recorded his first save for Seattle in Wednesday's win over the Angels. Once Yoshihisa Hirano landed on the injured list before the season, it was assumed that Matt Magill would be in line for saves until Hirano returned but that hasn't been the case so far. Altavilla has a career 3.59 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in five seasons with the Mariners and this was his first career save. The Mariners aren't expected to be in too many save situations this season and the Mariners appear to be going closer-by-committee until Hirano returns, so it's not worth picking any of these pitchers up to chase saves in the meantime.
