Drew Steckenrider News
The Seattle Mariners optioned right-hander Drew Steckenrider to Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday, according to president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto. Steckenrider has been in the mix in Seattle's save committee this year. The 31-year-old reliever has two saves and four holds, but he's also blown two saves and has a 5.65 ERA in 14 1/3 innings so far for Seattle. He had 14 saves and seven holds while producing a nice 2.00 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 62 games for the M's last year, but Steckenrider has been too unreliable in 2022. In the meantime, the Mariners will roll with Paul Sewald, Diego Castillo and Andres Munoz in their closer-by-committee setup.
The Seattle Mariners placed right-hander Drew Steckenrider on the restricted list on Monday and selected left-hander Roenis Elias' contract from Triple-A Tacoma in a corresponding move. The 31-year-old Steckenrider probably isn't vaccinated, so he won't make the trip for the team's series in Toronto this week. Steckenrider does have two saves in 13 innings pitched for the M's this year as part of a committee approach to the ninth inning, but he also has allowed seven earned runs and was pulled from a save situation on Sunday after allowing two runs. Diego Castillo, Paul Sewald and Andres Munoz could see save chances with Steckenrider out this week. Elias missed each of the last two seasons due to an elbow injury, and he could be sent right back to the minors when Steckenrider returns later this week.
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Drew Steckenrider notched his first save of the season on Friday against the Minnesota Twins. Paul Sewald came in and pitched the eighth inning before handing the ball over to Steckenrider. Sewald retired all the batters he faced before exiting the game. Steckenrider made things interesting by allowing a leadoff single, however he managed to protect the one-run lead and help the Mariners get the victory. It sounds like Steckenrider will be a valuable member of the Mariners bullpen this season.
