Austin Wynns News
To make room on the 40-man roster for recent free-agent signing Frankie Montas, the Cincinnati Reds designated catcher Austin Wynns for assignment on Tuesday. Wynns signed a one-year, $950,000 with the Reds in December as catching depth. If the 33-year-old backstop clears waivers, he'll likely return to the Giants and try to earn a roster spot in spring training. Wynns spent the 2023 season with the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies and hit .208/.268/.277 with one home run and 10 RBI in 145 plate appearances in 51 games. Forty five of his games played came with the Rockies. In five big-league seasons, Wynns has a career .226 batting average with only 13 home runs, 61 RBI and 63 runs scored in 653 plate appearances.
The Cincinnati Reds signed free-agent catcher Austin Wynns to a one-year, $950,000 major-league deal on Thursday and designated outfielder T.J. Hopkins for assignment in a corresponding move. Wynns will head to Cincinnati to provide catching depth behind Tyler Stephenson and Luke Maile at the big-league level in 2024. The 33-year-old veteran bounced around the National League West in 2023 with the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies and played in 51 games, going 27-for-130 (.208) with a home run, six doubles, 10 RBI and 11 runs scored in 145 plate appearances. Wynns will come into next year with zero fantasy appeal while hitting .226 with 13 home runs and 61 RBI in 231 games in his five years in the major leagues.
The Colorado Rockies have claimed catcher Austin Wynns off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, according to Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post. The Dodgers designated the 32-year-old for assignment on Sunday after appearing in six games and batting .154 with no home runs or stolen bases and adding two RBI across 14 plate appearances. Wynns gives the Rockies some more depth at the backstop position, as the club had just two catchers on their 40-man roster before the transaction. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect this to have any effect on fantasy baseball.
