Michael King News
San Diego Padres right-hander Michael King has been very good in limited Cactus League action this spring. The 28-year-old has yet to allow an earned runs with four strikeouts against zero walks in five frames to begin his spring. Acquired from the Yankees in a trade that sent superstar Juan Soto to the Bronx, King worked to a tidy 2.75 ERA across 49 appearances (nine starts) in the 2023 season, one year after posting a stellar 2.29 ERA in 34 relief outings with the Yankees in the 2022 campaign. All told, King sports a 3.38 ERA across 115 outings (19 starts) in the big leagues and ATC projects him to toss a 3.59 ERA alongside an 18.4% K-BB% across 24 starts and 32 appearances in the 2024 campaign. His fantasy stock is certainly on the rise as he projects to be the No. 3 starter for the Padres in the upcoming season.
New San Diego Padres right-hander Michael King and the team agreed to a one-year, $3.15 million deal for 2024 on Thursday to avoid salary arbitration. King was part of the package sent to San Diego when the New York Yankees acquired outfielder Juan Soto in December. The 28-year-old was moved from the bullpen to the starting rotation in 2023 in the Bronx and delivered to the tune of a strong 2.75 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with 127 strikeouts in 49 outings (nine starts) over 104 2/3 innings pitched. He's expected to stay in a starting role for the Friars in his first year with the team and will have plenty of fantasy appeal with an upgrade in home ballpark. No matter what role King had in 2023, he was effective with a nearly 30 percent strikeout rate.
The San Diego Padres officially sent outfielders Juan Soto and Trent Grisham to the New York Yankees in a blockbuster trade on Wednesday in exchange for right-handers Michael King, Drew Thorpe, Jhony Brito, and Randy Vasquez, and catcher Kyle Higashioka. The Padres cleared payroll space and acquired some much-needed pitching help with this massive deal. King, 28, could give the team a solid mid-rotation starter, but he struggled in the big leagues before 2023 and has already dealt with a major elbow injury. Thorpe, 23, was the Yankees' No. 5 prospect and could be a rotation option down the line, but he has yet to pitch above Double-A. Brito, 25, doesn't miss many bats and is likely ticketed for a relief role after struggling as a starter in the majors. Vasquez, 25, has durability questions but could serve as a back-end starter for the Friars. And Higashioka, 34, has some decent power and should serve as Luis Campusano's backup.

Right-hander Michael King, who had made just 10 big-league starts over four seasons with the New York Yankees heading into 2023, began last year in the bullpen before eventually being moved to a starting role. Nine of his 49 appearances came in a starting role, which allowed King to reach a career-high 104 2/3 innings pitched. All nine of his starts came in the second half in the Bronx. Regardless of his role, the 28-year-old was effective with a 2.75 ERA -- his second straight season with an ERA under 3.00 -- a 1.15 WHIP, a career-high six saves , 32 walks and a career-high 127 strikeouts. King features a four-pitch mix that includes a fastball, sinker, sweeper and a changeup that was particularly effective against left-handed hitters. He comes to San Diego as the headliner for the Padres in the blockbuster deal that sent Juan Soto to the Yanks. As long as King stays healthy after a career-high workload in 2023, he should be cemented in the Padres' starting rotation to help them replace National League Cy Young winner Blake Snell. King's strikeout upside and upgrade in home ballpark will make him attractive as fantasy managers look to fill out their rotations in the later rounds of drafts. ATS has him projected for a 3.60 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and what would be a new career-high in strikeouts with 140 in 129 innings pitched. RotoBaller has King ranked as the No. 39 fantasy starting pitcher heading into his first year in San Diego.
