Sandy León News
Free-agent catcher Sandy Leon re-signed a minor-league deal with the Texas Rangers on Tuesday, according to sources. Leon was just released by the team on Monday, but he'll quickly make his return. The 34-year-old backstop will begin the season in the minor leagues and will provide the club with some veteran catching depth behind Jonah Heim. He has spent 11 years in the big leagues with five different organizations, but he has done very little with the bat. In 533 career games, Leon has hit just .210/.278/.314 with a .592 OPS, 31 home runs, 145 RBI and 154 runs scored with the Washington Nationals, Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Guardians, Miami Marlins and Minnesota Twins.
The Texas Rangers signed free-agent catcher Sandy Leon to a minor-league deal on Thursday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training, according to a source. Leon played in 33 combined games in 2022 with the Cleveland Guardians and Minnesota Twins, hitting .169/.298/.211 with no homers, four RBI and six runs scored in 86 plate appearances. He had meniscus surgery on his right knee in October and is unlikely to be on the Opening Day roster, as the team already has backstops Jonah Heim and Sam Huff. The 33-year-old veteran has played 11 years in the big leagues and has a career slash line of .210/.278/.314 with a .592 OPS and 31 home runs, so he's never been much of an offensive force.
Miami Marlins catcher Sandy Leon reached base three times and pitched a scoreless inning in Friday's 9-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Leon got the start for a resting Jorge Alfaro and went 2-for-3 with a double, a single, a walk, and a run scored. The solid offensive performance left Leon with a .186 batting average and a .486 OPS. He hits like a pitcher, so he took the mound for the eighth inning when the score was 9-2. He ended up pitching a perfect inning, inducing one ground out and two fly outs. Leon was starting for a bit while Alfaro was on the injured list, but he's back to being a backup and even as a starter was not a worthwhile fantasy asset.
