Taijuan Walker, Steven Souza Jr. Hit Open Market

The Arizona Diamondbacks non-tendered starting pitcher Taijuan Walker and outfielder Steven Souza Jr. on Monday, making them both free agents. Walker missed most of the last two seasons after having Tommy John surgery, but he was able to post a 3.49 ERA in 157 1/3 innings in 2017. The right-hander will surely be coveted by teams looking for starting pitching help on the open market. Like Walker, Souza was injured in his two years with the Snakes, and he hit just .220 in 72 games in 2018 while bothered by a shoulder issue. Souza missed all of the 2019 season because of a serious knee injury he suffered in spring training. His blend of power and speed should land him with another team, though.

Steven Souza Jr. Running At 100 Percent

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Steven Souza Jr. (knee) posted a video on his Twitter account on Monday and said that he's running at 100 percent in Arizona. Souza suffered a devastating knee injury in spring training when he tore the ACL, LCL and PCL in his left knee, which caused him to miss the entire 2019 season. He'll turn 31 next April and is always a health risk, but his blend of speed and power should be useful to the D-backs in 2020 if he can stay on the field. Souza played in just 72 games for the Snakes in 2018 and hit just .220/.309/.369 with five home runs and 29 RBI. The year prior with the Rays, he slugged a career-high 30 homers and stole 16 bases. He won't be attractive in standard redraft leagues, but Souza could become a waiver option once the season gets underway.

Wilmer Flores Hits The Open Market

The Arizona Diamondbacks declined their team option on infielder Wilmer Flores and pitcher T.J. McFarland on Thursday, making them both free agents. Flores played in just 89 games for the Snakes in 2019 because of injury, but he was solid when on the field, hitting .317/.361/.487 with nine home runs and 37 RBI in 265 at-bats. The Venezuelan utility man hits lefties well and offers valuable versatility on the field in deep mixed and single-universe leagues. It remains to be seen where he'll land, but he could have some appeal to fantasy owners because of his flexibility in 2020.

Taijuan Walker Will Start on Sunday

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Taijuan Walker (elbow, shoulder) will draw the start in Sunday's game against the San Diego Padres. This will be the first start of the season for Walker. He's recovering from Tommy John surgery and a capsule strain in his right shoulder. The Diamondbacks aren't likely going to push him deep into the game on Sunday. He's not a recommended streaming option for Sunday. Hopefully, Walker is able to bounce back and have a strong 2020 campaign.

Ketel Marte Shut Down for the Season

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Ketel Marte (back) is being shut down for the rest of the 2019 season, according to Steve Gilbert. Marte is suffering from a stress reaction in his lower back. The Diamondbacks are hopeful that Marte is not going to need surgery. He'll finish the season batting .329/.389/.592 with 32 home runs and 92 knocked in with the D-Backs.
