Phillies Interested In Dellin Betances, Austin Romine

The Philadelphia Phillies are interested in relief pitcher Dellin Betances and catcher Austin Romine, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The Phillies have also been linked to shortstop Didi Gregorius. It makes more sense now that manager Joe Girardi, who coached this trio with the Yankees, is the skipper of the Phillies. Betances, an All-Star from 2014-17, suffered a right shoulder impingement in spring training and an oblique injury in June, limiting him to facing just two hitters in 2019. He then suffered a partial tear in his Achilles, so it was a lost season. When healthy, though, Betances has proven to be one of the most dominant relievers in baseball, and he could have a chance at saves in 2020 if he's healthy and lands in Philly. Romine is considered a solid backup catcher. He'd have minimal value if he's just depth for J.T. Realmuto with the Phillies.

Yankees Release Jacoby Ellsbury, DFA Greg Bird

The New York Yankees released outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury and designated Greg Bird for assignment on Wednesday. Ellsbury, who hasn't played since 2017 due to various injuries, was let go with more than $26 million left on his $153 million, seven-year deal. The 36-year-old hit .264 with 39 homers, 198 RBI and 102 stolen bases in 520 games in his six years in pinstripes, but he may never make it back to the bigs again. Bird, 27, had plenty of power-hitting intrigue, but he, too, failed to stay healthy for the Yankees. He missed all of 2016 following surgery for a torn labrum in his right shoulder. Bird could never stay on the field for long stretches of time, and his numbers suffered as a result. He should be able to latch on with another team, but he'll have to earn a spot.

Yankees Won't Pursue Didi Gregorius Aggressively

The New York Yankees didn't extend a one-year, $17.8 million qualifying offer to shortstop Didi Gregorius and aren't expected to aggressively pursue re-signing him. The Yankees are comfortable with Gleyber Torres at shortstop and DJ LeMahieu at the keystone, but there's still the possibility that Gregorius returns at a discount price. Gregorius proved his health after coming back from Tommy John surgery in June, but he didn't exactly tear the cover off the baseball in the second half of the season. The Reds are already connected to the 29-year-old. The shortstop hit just .238 with a .276 on-base percentage in 2019, but he does have some pop at his position. Gregorius could bounce back next season if he's healthy, but his value will depend on where he lands. If he's back in the Bronx, he might not even have an everyday role.

Miguel Andujar May Switch Positions In 2020

New York Yankees third baseman Miguel Andujar, who played in just 12 games in 2019 due to a shoulder injury, could be moved around the field in 2020. He could be an option at an infield corner spot, at designated hitter or even in the outfield. Andujar will turn 25 in March, had an .855 OPS in his rookie season and finished second to only Shohei Ohtani in the 2018 Rookie of the Year voting. Giovanny Urshela was a stud both offensively and defensively at the hot corner in place of Andujar, but Andujar hit .297/.328/.527 with 47 doubles, 27 homers and 92 RBI in 149 games in 2018. Andujar and Urshela project to compete at third base, but Andujar could also be an option at first base with Luke Voit, Greg Bird and Mike Ford in the mix.

Yankees, Brett Gardner Discussing Reunion

The New York Yankees and free-agent outfielder Brett Gardner are already talking about a deal to keep him in pinstripes. Gardner is the longest-tenured Yankee and set career highs in home runs (28) and OPS (.829) during the 2019 season. He slashed .251/.325/.503 and also scored 86 runs, drove in 74 and stolen 10 bases in 491 at-bats. Gardner was a key outfielder for New York last year amid all their injuries. He can be an essential top-of-the-lineup table-setter for a powerful Yankees squad, but the only question is how much playing time he'd receive in 2020 if the rest of the team's outfielders are all healthy.
