Yairo Munoz News
The Arizona Diamondbacks signed free-agent second baseman Yairo Munoz to a minor-league deal on Monday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training. Munoz was with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2022 and played in 29 major-league games, going 12-for-57 (.211) with three home runs, seven RBI, seven runs scored and one stolen base. The 28-year-old has a career slash line of .268/.319/.396 with a .716 OPS, 14 home runs, 66 RBI, 72 runs scored and 16 stolen bases in five major-league seasons with the Phillies, Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals. Munoz could certainly carve out a utility infield role with Arizona this season, but he's unlikely to make much of a fantasy impact, even in the deepest of NL-only leagues.
The Philadelphia Phillies selected the contract of infielder Yairo Munoz from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Monday night and optioned outfielder Mickey Moniak to Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move. The team also moved second baseman Jean Segura (finger) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL. Munoz earned the promotion by hitting three home runs and driving in eight with a 1.037 OPS in his last nine games, and he's played just about every position in the minors this year. He has slashed .319/.345/.799 on the year and is starting at second base and is batting eighth against Miami Marlins left-hander Trevor Rogers on Tuesday. The 27-year-old has hit .274 with 11 home runs, 59 RBI and 15 stolen bases in 213 career major league games over four seasons, and he could stick as a super-utility man in Philadelphia.
Boston Red Sox outfielder Yairo Munoz left Thursdays game versus Miami early due to lower back spasms. Prior to his departure, Munoz went 0-for-2 at the dish, ceding way in left field to Tzu-Wei Lin. Having seen consistent playing time since making his season debut on Sept. 1, Munoz has compiled a .333 average through his first 12 games. Despite not having drawn a walk this year, Munoz has flashed potential with six extra-base hits and two stolen bases. Check back for an update on his status moving forward as he presents a low-priced DFS option over the final week-plus should he stay healthy.
