Eric Decker News
New England Patriots wide receiver Eric Decker announced his retirement on Instagram on Sunday. Decker was signed by the Patriots during training camp but failed to produce and saw the writing on the wall before final cuts. The veteran caught just two of seven targets for 12 yards in the last two preseason contests against the Eagles and Panthers. Decker was battling Braxton Berrios, Riley McCarron and Paul Turner for the final spot. Decker will finish his eight-year career with 5,816 yards and 53 touchdowns on 439 catches. With Julian Edelman suspended for the first four games, Phillip Dorsett is likely to benefit the most out of the slot to open the season. He's worth a late-round stab in deeper leagues.
New England Patriots wide receiver Eric Decker dropped the first pass he received from quarterback Tom Brady in 11-on-11 drills last week, dropped two more passes Sunday and dropped three passes in practice on Monday. However, he showed mental toughness to bounce back with four straight catches. Its a work in progress, Decker said. I feel more comfortable with the playbook. Things are slowing down, mentally. Thats one thing. Just got to be able to get on the field and execute and be able to not think about things and just react. Were getting there. Every day is a learning experience, is an opportunity for me to get better and thats how Im taking it. He wouldn't be the first veteran to struggle with the playbook and in gaining chemistry with Brady. Decker has an opportunity for a big role early in the season out of the slot with Julian Edelman suspended for four games, but Decker must first beat out Phillip Dorsett. If Decker can win the job, he'll be worth a late-round flier in PPR leagues.
New England Patriots wide receiver Eric Decker could have a leg up for the slot role to begin the season due to his familiarity with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels from their days in Denver. Decker was drafted by McDaniels in 2010 and spent his rookie year learning from him. Hes a smart guy, said head coach Bill Belichick. I know he has recall from some of the things that we do that Josh did at Denver that are carryover. Theres a lot of differences, but theres certainly a lot of carryover. There's likely to be an adjustment period for Decker, but he has the opportunity for a big role early in the season with Julian Edelman suspended four games. He could be worth a late-round flier if he wins the slot job over Phillip Dorsett.
