Aldon Smith News
The Seattle Seahawks released defensive end Aldon Smith on Wednesday, according to a source. Smith produced 48 tackles and five sacks over a full season with the Dallas Cowboys in 2020 in his return to football. He parlayed that into a one-year deal with Seattle back in April, but he's back on the open market with the 2021 regular season quickly approaching after he was arrested for alleged second-degree battery. The 31-year-old pass-rusher was a first-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2011. Smith made the Pro Bowl and was a first-team All-Pro in his second season in 2012, but off-the-field incidents kept him out from 2016 to last year, and there's a real chance that he won't be given another opportunity in the NFL.
Seattle Seahawks defensive end Aldon Smith turned himself in on Tuesday night after a warrant was issued for his arrest in connection with an alleged battery in the New Orleans area, according to the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office. He was booked and released Wednesday on $25,000 bond. Smith will be arraigned on July 14. He allegedly choked a victim unconscious during a confrontation that began inside a coffee shop. The Seahawks had signed Smith to a one-year deal worth $1,127,500 just two days before the incident. Smith returned to the NFL last year and was successful with the Dallas Cowboys after missing more than four seasons because of an indefinite suspension by the NFL for multiple off-field incidents and violations of the league's substance-abuse policy. Smith is once again in trouble off the field, which could lead to another suspension from the league.
The Seattle Seahawks signed free-agent pass-rusher Aldon Smith to an undisclosed one-year deal on Thursday, according to sources. Smith was an All-Pro for the San Francisco 49ers back in 2012 and recorded five sacks, 14 QB hits and 50 pressures for the Dallas Cowboys last season in his return to action after being out of the league from 2016 to 2019 due to a number of legal issues. The 31-year-old has 52.5 career sacks since entering the NFL in 2011. Seattle has had interest in Smith for a while now and even tried to trade for him last year. If Smith can continue to avoid off-field distractions, he could form a formidable trio with Carlos Dunlap and Kerry Hyder on the Seahawks defensive line.
