Marqise Lee News
Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network has reported that the New Orleans Saints worked out a group of wide receivers on Monday that includes veterans Kenny Stills and Marqise Lee. The Saints blew out the Green Bay Packers in Week 1, but the club seems to be doing their due diligence with No. 1 wide receiver Michael Thomas (ankle) on the PUP list and No. 2 wide receiver Tre'Quan Smith (hamstring) on Injured Reserve. Stills started his career with the Saints in 2013 and played two years in Sean Payton's system. Most recently, Stills played in 10 games and caught 11 of his 19 targets for 144 yards for the Houston Texans. Lee spent five years with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but has suffered a string of bad injuries, that includes a torn ACL in 2018. Lee hasn't suited up in a NFL since 2019, but has bounced around training camps with the New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers over the past two offseasons. Even if the Saints sign Lee and/or Stills, both can be avoided in all formats.
The San Francisco 49ers signed free-agent wide receiver Bennie Fowler to an undisclosed one-year deal on Friday. In a corresponding move, the Niners waived wide receiver Marqise Lee less than a week after signing him. Fowler has played for the Denver Broncos, New York Giants and New Orleans Saints in his seven years in the NFL. In total, he has 97 receptions for 1,101 yards and six touchdowns in 68 total games (12 starts). His best season came in 2017 with Denver, when he had 29 catches on 56 targets for 350 yards and three scores in 16 games (four starts). In five games with the Saints last year, Fowler had two catches for 11 yards in five games before landing on the Injured Reserve in late October. He will battle for a roster spot as receiver depth in training camp.
Former Jacksonville Jaguars and New England Patriots wide receiver Marqise Lee is signing an undisclosed deal with the San Francisco 49ers on Monday, according to a source. Lee spent the first five seasons of his NFL career with Jacksonville after they selected him in the second round out of USC in 2014. The 29-year-old opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19, so he never actually played a game with the Patriots. Lee hasn't played in a full season since 2017, but he'll have a real chance to make the Niners roster this summer if he can stay healthy. He dealt with injuries in 2018 and 2019 and played a combined six games those two years. In 59 career games (30 starts) with Jacksonville, Lee had 174 catches for 2,184 yards and eight touchdowns. He'll be hoping to provide some depth behind Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk and will compete with the likes of Mohamed Sanu, Richie James, Trent Sherfield and Jalen Hurd.
