  • Derek Carr's Back Injury Bothered Him Throughout The Year

Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr (back) said the three transverse process fractures he suffered in his back in Week 4 against the Broncos affected him throughout the season. He was originally expected to miss two to four weeks, but Carr ended up only missing one game. "I had to deal with it," Carr said. "I had to do certain things to manage it, but I just didn't talk about it. I didn't want it to be an excuse. It was a want more than anything else. I didn't want it to be a reason. I couldn't let that be a reason why I couldn't do A, B or C." After a promising 2016 season, Carr took a huge step back in 2017, but his back injury likely didn't help matters. With new head coach Jon Gruden now in town, there will be high hopes that Carr can return to his 2016 form. With full health, there's a good chance that happens, but fantasy owners probably aren't taking any chances on him as anything more than a low-end QB1.

  • Derek Carr Wants Tough Love

Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr said he wants new coach Jon Gruden "to be tough" on him. Gruden has said he will "demand more" from his quarterback moving forward, and it sounds like Carr is fine with that. "I hope that he demands of me. I hope he's hard on me," Carr said. "Let's go fix problems that I have and let's do what I need to do to win championships." Carr has plenty of problems to fix coming off a down season, but he has shown in the past he can be a quality quarterback. His willingness to accept criticism and work with Gruden is a good sign he will get back to that level again.

  • Derek Carr Will Shoulder The Load

Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr will have to deal with new head coach Jon Gruden this season and Gruden said he is "going to ask a lot more from Derek Carr at the line of scrimmage." "We're going to put him in a position to do some of the things we did in the past with his recognition of defenses, his ability to communicate and showcase his talented arm," Gruden continued. "I think the offense will demand more from him, which will really improve him." Carr's regression along with the rest of the offense certainly played a role in Jack Del Rio getting the boot, so it makes sense for Gruden to focus in on his quarterback right from the start. Getting more out of the receiver room, especially Amari Cooper, should be a priority as well.
